Car is not starting

Car is not starting
I drove home today from the store, all was fine... no dashboard lights came on. Put groceries away, got ready to go out again and the car wouldn't start. It has gas. The battery seems fine. The engine cranks over, but it just doesn't start. There was not sputter or anything as if it were trying to start... the engine just continued cranking with no sign of life.
Trying to start it, I see all the dashboard lights come on, but when i turn the key to turn the radio on, no lights stay lit... which seems normal. So I'm not sure whats going on.
So far I've tried cleaning the key interface on the dashboard and I cleaned my key itself... but that didn't do anything. The key lets the windows up and down when I hold it close to the door latch and press the car lock buttons, so the key seems to be fine. I check the 3 fuses boxes and took a good look to make sure nothing was burned out. I don't have a test light but all the fuses appeared fine from looking at the metal inside them.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

yea, he did suggest that, and that could be one of several things wrong im now understanding. if it were dead though, i imagine it would have experienced some intermittent dieing, but it was just so sudden. car turned off fine, and wouldnt turn back on several hours later.
