computer oil level check

I was bored and did the oil level check. The computer displays "add 1 qt oil!" The car is 2 months a 1 week old with 2400 miles on it.

I assume this is covered by the included maintenance.

Mine has shown add 1 qt and add 2 qts before. Now it just say's perform service on time.

Try it again on a level surface it might change.

Mine said add 1qt sometimes and not others depending on the grade of the parking lot. I measured the oil with the dip stick when it said at 1qt and it was halfway between full and add. I asked the dealer about it and they added a 1/2 qt. This was at about 4,500 miles. Use the dipstick, it's more accurate.

From my experience, a very small deviation from level ground will register noticably different oil levels. Always attempt to take oil readings in similar surroundings for greatest accuracy. My garage has one level area while the rest of the space is on a 1-2%slope. I check the oil level before starting the car when left sitting overnite in the same level spot .
This method gives me the most consistent results especially if I'm monitoring consumption.

Except, I think you're supposed to check oil when it's basically at operating temperature. You wait a few minutes for it to drain back into the pan. I suppose if you check it the same way all the time, it's consistent. But, you might get an early "low" reading since the volume will be lower when cold.

True. But I usually have the car filled to the mid point of the dipstick when cold. Testing at the same temp. and place in my garage gives me the best indication of consumption with the least variables. To date (CLK 55 w/ 7000 miles) I had no measurable signs of usage.

"Now it just say's perform service on time."

This means that you have not waited long enough since turning off the engine to perform an accurate oil level check. It has nothing to do with servicing the oil on time (I think its a German-English translation problem).

Fuzzo, there is a dipstick on the four cylinder engine in the coupe. You sedan owners with your sixes are out of luck.

Ahhh, yes....The "post dipstick" generation. Though I can't believe you bought a brand new car and didn't bother to at least look under the hood to marvel at the beautiful German engineering.

Oil warning messages

I had this similar message of: "stop engine now" and "perform service on time" with just 4,800 miles.

Oil level was fine and after a shut down & restart, everything was okay...when I brought the car in for warranty service, the trouble code indicated a bad oil sensor and I got an oil change and new oil quality sensor.

.....Just as the oil level indicator in my 911 sucks under the best conditions, (it also analog by the way)If you really gots to know, NOTHING beats the using the stick. Aside from checking it's function, I've never used the sensor to check the oil level in my CLK55....Call me paranoid.

OK, you're paranoid! Just kidding. Dipstick is a good idea because you can actually see the condition of your oil. Sensors fail, the finger never lies!

In answer to the original thread question, mine also needed a quart at 2500 mi. Semi expected for normal consumption. Not sure if covered in scheduled maintanance. Kind of like filling up with gas. Be sure to check with your dealer as to the oil weight in the car. I got a surprise while I called my dealer as it was not Mobil 1.
