CPS - "Crankshaft Position Sensor" Discussion Thread

It sounds a little complicated. It could be one of multiple things. IMO...Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, module, crank/cam sensor, MAF sensor, ECU. I'm NO expert on MB's but if I was you, I would let the experts at the MB dealer work on it. It's VERY hard to troubleshoot intermittent problems without scanners or test lights at the time the problem or malfunction shows up.
Good Luck!!!

I don't have a C240 so I can't give specifics but in general, it's in the back of the engine by the flywheel. Here's a place to get it. I didn't know what year so I plugged in 2004. MB calls it a reference sensor, $68 and knowing MB, probably requires a torx socket to get it off.

BTW, why would you replace it yourself, it's covered under the Clean Air Act as an emmissions control device and covered for 80K miles.

Did you buy the car in the United State of America? If so, open the owners manual and look for the warranty booklet, you know, the owners manual that you never opened before and look at the first page, the one that tells you how long each warranty is, there's about half dozen different warranties. Look at the one that says Federal Emmisions Warranty 8 yrs, 80,000 miles. Now I can't vouch for how smart your SA is but some can actually read so if he doesn't know, bring him the warranty booklet and say fix it or I'll turn you into the FBI who will send him to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for interigation.....
On the EPA's website it shows exactly what components are covered but I'm sure anything that makes your check engine light go off is covered. There are no exceptions to this warranty, they can not void it no matter how many mods you have done, it's part of the federal clean air act.

Would the SA at the dealership know of this Clean Air Act? Is there anything from MB stating that they will replace anything in regards to the emmissions as long as the car is below 80k miles? I am taking it in to the dealer this coming week.

Well, on my way to the dealer this morning my car died on me twice. I was able to get it started 20 minutes after each stall, but man it was a problem! The car is at the dealer to get hooked up to their diagnostic machine and hopefully to resolve the problem by the end of today. Thank you all for your help. I will let you know what happens.
