I've been getting stalling problems like everybody else on my C240 4matic, and yesterday the car decided not to start anymore, cranks just fine but just won't catch anymore. So after some quick reading online, I discover it's the CPS sensor that's bad, and I also find that it is supposed to be a nice quick 30 minute job. Okay, cool, so I order a new CPS sensor (the crankshaft one; not the easier to replace camshaft sensor) and today started trying to pull off the sensor....
What a PITA!! It's not easy at all like everyone says, the sensor is located on top of the tranny bellhousing which is pretty much in the middle of the engine -- tranny hides it from bottom access, and hoses/wiring harness/intake manifold hides top access. There's no room in there at all, I almost got my hand stuck trying to feel where the bolt is. And one more thing is you can't see the bolt as it's hidden under the sensor so this makes it very difficult to fit a socket or what have you in there.
I've been staring at it for awhile now pondering if I should buy a short socket screwdriver for the bolt (it's a torx bolt but a 6.5mm regular socket fits) or a joint for my ratchet set.
That is all, I just wanted to throw some info out there in case anyone was considering doing this.
Might be better to suck it up and let the dealer take care of it
I replaced the sensor, the car still cranks but still doesn't run, so changing the CPS isn't the absolute magic bullet to curing these problems. Just for everyone's information....
over a month ago i was coming north from NYC, doing like 90-95 when i felt a quick lost of power for like 1/2 a second...
later that day after going home i drove to my moms house as im backing up into her drive way the car shutsoff and would not start up. i tryed to crank over and over but nothing... it would turn over fine but it would not start up... just like if it was out of gas. i gave up and went out with the family for an hour. When i came back i tryed and the thing starts up right away...
i gave no mind and started to drive the car again... now last night i went to work to pick something up... i was in a rush so I did 90-100 in some parts of the highway (a 10 minute comute). i parked went in and came back out.... the car turned on fine but as im 1 mile away from work in the middle of nowhere really dark lol the car turns of while im on 4th gear.... same thing it would not start up, it would only turn over.... i got a ride and came back like 2 hours later and it started right up.
would this still be the CPS? if so where could i buy this little piece (autozone, napa?)... i cant afford to go to the dealer since i just got a house... the car has 91000 miles and im the second owner paid cash for it so i have no coverage
ohh its a 2001....
thanks

A few days before there was a moment where when I step on the gas the car would not respond; it will just rev up without moving like in neutral.
Then a few days later it went kaput!
Since then I get nervous driving when I hear something "out of character"
so to speak. I began overreacting to things now.
Good luck!
there's been a rash of 2001-2003 C240 malfunctions this whole past week !
time to send all those C240's to Mexico......
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

Maybe they are getting beyond their use by date but I doubt it - they are mechanically tough

I think it's the electronic gremlins that are getting the best of them though.
All these sensors, electronic contraptions, and control modules just wreaked havoc on 2001-2002 C-Classes.

anyways i ordered the sensor from carquest and picked it up the next day.
i took the big intake and then the intake "L" plastic piece that goes between the motor and the intake. from there all u need to do is remove some hoses and you will have access to the cps. this is where im at now, is any1 interested in pics ?
oh and the sensor was $96 from the carquest store.

just got home from sacramento, and my cps dies out. thank god i was at home already when it stalled out... i was scared as **** because the CPS sensor has been failing for the past 3 weeks and if it was to die when i was halfway to LA i would've been screwed! we need pics, ASAP! thanks!!!

It is held on by a small bolt and you'll need a 1/4" ratchet with a 14" long extension to reach it. I cant recall what size socket you'll need but I think it's about 8mm.
It's easiest to reach in behind the cylinder head and unclip the wiring lead. (There's no room for your hand AND the tool so you'll get angry and cuss out that car a few times before you're done)
Remove the screw and the CPS pulls straight up.
The new CPS goes in and you have to line it up by feel.
I put some paper over the screw into the socket to hold it snug. (...After I dropped the screw a couple of times and had to take off the splash shield and jack up the car to get under there and retrieve the screw)
When you're done, clip the wiring connector back on and you're done. All in all it took me less than 1 hour.
