Aftermarket steering wheel

I see many posts of replacing the stock steering wheel with another MB steering wheel but has anyone replaced their mercedes steering wheel with an aftermarket steering wheel such as a Momo or maybe Sparco?

I have seen people with older Mercedes Benz change theirs but anyone with a newer mercedes benz with steering wheel controls? I dont mind losing the controls but there are some things on the screen within the cluster that does help such as the electronic dipstick and the engine temp.

Im wondering if anyone at all has done this, and if so what has been done with the controls. And if no one has done this before, does anyone have any ideas on wiring new buttons after replacing stock steering wheel?

Any help would be appreciated

There is a hub available for 203's so you could always switch to any QR and wheel of your choice. The wiring will just need to be relocated somewhere else, maybe the glove box.

I decided I wanted to retain the buttons so went with a Renntech wheel, which is also up for grabs at the moment.

it'll be hard without the hub adaptor like infected said... without your steering buttons you wont be able to clear your service lights and etc.

You'd lose your airbags, which would kill resale, and be a pain to get the indicator nanny to stay off, I'd think.

The better options are to buy Infected's Renntech wheel (free plug!), a Brabus wheel if they're still available, or send out your oem wheel to get redone. I had my Brabus wheel redone by AGLA in Florida, and was happy with the results. Right now, looking to Dallas Custom in TX to do the wheel for my other car.

I don't think that fitting a Momo, Sparco, Keyes, etc. would be a smart move, nor do I think it would really look that good, either, honestly.

Tommy did you ever get your Brabus back on? I recall it took a while for the shop to have it redone?

Yes, it took them a while to get a blue carbon fiber twill to not fall apart while setting it up on the rim. I'm very happy with how AGLA did it, not too happy with Alan (the owner) not returning phone calls and being a tool during the very long process. If I were to do it all over again, I'd send it to Dallas Steering Wheel, and get it in a blue alcantara instead. As soon as my tax refund comes in, my teeny aftermarket wheel for the crx is going to go to Dallas, as will my sunvisors to get a perforated leather/alcantara combo - it all should look great when I get it back.

Main reason I wanted to change the steering wheel is because it seems a little big. But looking at infected's Renntech steering wheel its the same size as stock. Where in Florida is the place that did your steering wheel? and how much did it cost?

He's in Plantation.
http://aglausa.com/p/home.html

Yes, any of the aftermarket options are the same size, due to keeping the ability to have the buttons and airbag functioning. Only exception I know of is the flat-bottomed DTM version, but that's the same size except for the flat bottom.

I honestly forget how much it was - 400-500 or so? But that was with blue cf, which he said he'll never be doing again.

Plantation is 10 minutes away from where I'm at! I might take a look at his services. How long did it take for it to get done on your car? As giving my steering wheel to someone might be a problem since this is the only steering wheel for my car.

I was assuming new steering wheels came with different airbag and buttons and thought the old one wouldn't be compatible.

No, you reuse your old air-bag. All the buttons are attached to the air-bag.

It took him about 9 months, but he really f*cked things up, and also couldn't get a suitable blue cf material for a while. Normally, it shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks.

I have two coupe non-C7 steering wheels. I could sell you one, and you could use that one for the one to be redone, or I could lend you one, and you could use that one as a loaner while yours is getting redone. Let me know if that would help.

Sounds like you had a pretty bad experience with him. I'm sure there should be other shops here in south florida that can get it redone.

How much would you be willing to sell one for?

For $100 and shipping, I'd part with one. I got my last one on ebay for $140, so I'd be taking a loss, but I really have no need for them now.

I think that a good part of the problem with him was the blue cf, so a more normal request would be no problem, I'd think. The quality is great, as I've had it for several years now, and it's held up fine.

I'm definitely interested in the steering wheel. But I might buy it from you maybe in a week or so if you don't mind.

OK, but don't be surprised if they're both sold when you try to buy one.

That's a chance I'll have to take! But if it's still available later on, I'll buy it. For now I decided to update the sound system since the steering wheel would be a longer process. Planning on putting sub-woofers in.

On a side note, did an oil change today along with cleaning out the air filter. I have to say, changing the oil on this car was probably the easiest oil change I've ever done. Only problem was that the dealer gave me the wrong oil filter, he assumed i had the 1.8L. I was wondering why the filter was so small!
