You have to take the headlights apart to paint the bezel. I did it to my car. For the tails, you just mask off what doesn't get painted (meaning the reverse light in this instance) and paint the rest.

Also for the tail lights, do you paint the outside, or are you supposed to take them apart as well?

The tails get painted on the outside, but you need to have a real paint shop do them or they'll look like garbage. They'll mix some black paint in with some clear to make it translucent. When done that way they'll be as shiny as the paint because it is paint.

I was able to take mine apart carefully using a hair dryer and prying the lens off.

Out Of Control!!
I've used Testors model paint (window tint and clearcoat) for my tinting on my cars, and it works out fine. Important things are many thin layers of both tint and clear.
