6MT Transmission & Differential Same Oil ???
need a quick conformation before I order....![bow](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/bowdown.gif)
Royal Purple 01300 Max Gear 75W-90 High Performance Synthetic Automotive Gear Oil - 1 Quart : Amazon.com : Automotive
Thinking about ordering the above for my 2002 C230 6MT currently @90K miles...for the transmission oil change and the differential oil change......will the above product work for both or is only recomended for the transmission ....![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
One more question if I buy 3 of the above it should suffice for both Transmission and the differential...correct??
Appreciate your input...

thats just for the differential. your manual should say what goes in what. you dont want to put oil where the tranny fluid goes. also you can buy that stuff from any parts store like pepbooys. also the manual should say how much you need. you have to do it with your car being leveled so you need to do on a lift or jack all four corners up evenly

Royal Purple hold no approvals. The volumes are so low use MB genuine GL4 in your MT & GL5 in your diff.
On no account use GL5 in your MT. It will ruin the Synchro cones.

Having just gone through this, I urge you to listen to our fluids expert here. It's not worth risking a $2k diff or $6k tranny to save a few bucks on oil once every few years.

I am about to change the oils in my 6 speed MT and my Diff. How much oil is required for this change? 2 quarts of each(GL-4 and GL-5)? The car has 178,000 miles on the clock, BTY.

pacificman.....for rear diff you will need approx 11/2 quart and for the tranny you will need 1.5lt so it is the same 1.5 quart for both......For diff make sure that you open the pour hole first and then the drain hole and pretty much fill it till it starts pouring out of the fill hole. For tranny do the same but when pouring the fresh fluid measure 1.5lt fluid and pour it in....
I bought a cheap harbour freight hand pump to be able to pump the fluid in....it geat tricky when crawling under the car and pouring some thing in a small hole....need some kind of pump to extract the fluid from the container and pour into the hole...

What Glyn means is approved by MB, not that it meets an industry standard.
I have mentioned before how I find the C230 6MT to be "less than smooth". I jad a rough 1-2 shift in my Europa (I am not using the tranny that came with the car). I was using Castrol synthetic oil and was advised to use Red Line. It was amazing! It was as though I had new synchronizers! I put Red Line oil in the tranny of mty C230 to try to help it shift smoother but I can't say it made much if any difference. I haven't had any trouble with it. I've sent a sample to Blackstone and they didn't find anything to worry about so we're probably ok (I'll send another sample later to keep up with it).
It's your choice ("regular MB approved oil" or Red Line). At this point, I don't have a lot of opinion on the matter with regards to MB trannies.

Sorry I wasn't clear.
I had Castrol in my Europa transaxle and I had a rough 1-2 shift. When I put Red Line in it, it transformed the gear box and shifted like new.
I didn't, however, experience much difference between the OEM oil and Red Line in my 2005 C230 6MT. So far, I haven't had any problems either.

Benz only approves one additive system for the oil in their MT's. They use yellow metals in their synchro cones & use of the wrong product can cause a slow but steady deterioration of the cones due to sulphur phosphorus attack at elevated temperatures.

MB has the only product that is readily available. Mobil has on approved product but it is hell to find.
The MT requires changing so seldom & takes so little oil you may as well buy from a dealer.
