Another C230 kompressor down! m271 timing chain failure
So she went out started the car to go to work and it wouldn't idle for crap and sounded like someone put marbles in the crankcase. I knew it was all bad right away, especially because I had always heard these had problems with the heads failing. I had no Idea about the common timing chain problems. So after pulling the valve cover and inspecting the chain you can clearly see the intake cam gear is stripped to all hell. So This motor is toast those metal shavings made there way all through this motor and you can see fresh shiny metal on all the cam lobes as well. Motor is still running but the amount of metal thats in there is just scary.....
So now I am in need a of a used motor to swap this one out. If andone knows of a good places to check or maybe knows someone who has one I am looking for one ASAP! Figured I would post just for one more thread to motivate someone to replace their timing chain BEFORE it becomes a problem.
This is a common problem with these motor's. Usually the chain just breaks and then pistons meet valves and the motor is done. From the research I have done in the past couple of days (search username Hopper on here he has the best thread ive found yet) if you have own one of these cars and the chain has not been done DO IT NOW! I saw reports of this happening to people as early as 60k and then there are some people who have 130k and are still on the stock chain. Its simply just a weak chain and a poor design. The good news is just replacing the chain is not that bad of a job to do.

She has had since 70k miles and I have serviced it always myself royal purple and k&n oil filter everytime. never really had and issues at all. I had the oil seal for the air pump go bad, as well as the thermostat otherwise nothing else.

I just added more info to it. It has 116k miles on it and I take very good care of my cars, I honestly am blaming myself for this one and not researching the car a little bit deeper. I have always loved and trusted Mercedes so I didn't think anything of it I always just thought of it as a new car. I am young so live and learn I would Highly recommend going to google and searching common problems of whatever car you are driving right now haha. This all could have been prevented by changing the chain the guides are not even required just swap the chain out that's it. It can be done without removing the front cover too maybe 3-5 hour job.
c230 owners make this a VERY high priority I cannot tell you how devastated my girlfriend is over this. This morning she was telling me she never wants a benzo again.....

This is sadly a huge issue on this engine and it has been recommended to keep a very close eye on the chain and most on here replace at or before 100,000 miles as a maintenance item as we have seen so many people with chain issues.

208K miles still running great on the stock chain. I've got my money out of it, I'll put a V8 in it when and if she goes....

Seems to be not an 'uncommon' issue. I've got 96K on mine and believe I hear the dreaded chain rattle at startup. Just praying I can get to it before something serious happens...

Wish I read this a couple of days ago.
Sad to say this sounds all to familiar to me now. Ok so this is my 1st post and my first mercedes 06 c class 180 k se. I must say It did sound like a diesel for 1st 2 seconds after starting up but then settled down an ran nicely so I thought it was just getting the oil around the engine (I know nothing about cars). Anyhow I took it for a service (not a mb garage but a decent enough one) and to fix passenger srs light coming on which I found also os common problem. Next day after service engine light come on for the 1st time so I took the car back to the garage who informed me it was a fault codes 200p ? Something to do with valve timing, but to book it in and they would investigate further. So to today i went to start it and something went an woukdnt start. At yhis point I should say I have had the car 3 or 4 months and bought it from my brother in law( don't buy cars from family members incase of situations like this lol.)I have drove the car to Amsterdam no problems in fact I have done about 3k in the car. Called out the RAC who have confirmed it is the timing chain. So as I sit hear awaiting the call of the garage I'm wondering what are the chances I have done No damage to the valves etc? The car wasn't moving does that make a difference? Must admit I tried starting it once or twice could this have damaged the valves etc? My best hope is its just the chain needs replacing? I only paid £2500 an it had done 98000 miles and ran fine plus was in great condition well maintained and serviced. Just hope my time as a Mercedes owner is longer that 3 months. Thanks for any comments or advice in advance as I'm a complete novice. Should have stuck to golf's never had a serious problem with any 4 motion, gti's etc.
