Lets talk gas mileage

Hi all,

Ok, here is the thing. I drive an 06 C230 6 speed manual with the 2.5 V6 engine and it seems i can get much better gas mileage then what it seems the norm.

I have put 70k on the car the past 3 years and in that time (mix of city/highway diving) i have been getting 8.5 L per 100km or 28 MPG. Not to bad right?

Ok so here is where it gets a bit funny. On the highway i avg 6.6L per 100km or 36 MPG. I attempted to use as little fuel as possible one time and got that number down to 5.9 L per 100km or 40 MPG.

From the research i have done, the car should not get that type of MPG. I even calculated without the cars display and the numbers check out.

Just wondering what gas milage are you guys seeing and if maybe you all are around that 38-40 MPG range as well.

I used to watch the display for my gas mileage - and felt pretty good about it - but the display is not to be trusted. It can be used for relative comparisons but you can't trust the number it gives you. You have to actually calculate it yourself.

Calculate it yourself for a few tankfuls and let us know how it goes.

I think he calculated himself - "I even calculated without the cars display and the numbers check out".

One thing: are you driving in dense traffic? I found I got about 35 MPG on the highway driving 75mph for about an hour in a pretty dense condition. I guess all the draft created from other cars helps.
Of course when the highway cleared up a bit, the MPG started to decline.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
We had a guy in the machine shop that bought a 190 when it was new and bragged how great the mileage was going to be in his new car. The rest of the boys decided to have a little fun. Every day we'd sneak a gallon or so of gas into his tank while he was in the lunch room. He was calculating his mileage and was so proud to be getting 48 miles per gallon.

He took the car to get serviced. We stopped adding gas. He calculated his mileage for a couple of tanks and was grousing about how he was getting terrible fuel economy after the dealer worked on the car. We then put Polaroid's of us pouring gas in his car in his mailbox.

He thanked us for the pictures and said he would show them to the service manager at Penske while apologizing for shouting and jumping up and down about the mileage.

9l/100Km once warmed up & out of heavy traffic would be fairly typical.

EDIT: The real time damped consumption is a really good indication of how you are driving & state of tune.

What messes up overall calculations are number of cold starts running fully enriched open loop until warm. Cold the consumption can go as high as 14l/100Km or worse if you have a heavy foot.

Constant consumption fully warm is a very good measure.

I drive an '05 C230K with 6MT. The highest I ever got on the highway - according to the display - was 32 mpg. My wife's '06 C230 (2.5l V6) with auto does not display mileage as good but I've never calculated it. She drives more in stop and go traffic than I and she is not that impressed her mileage and she's used to a mini-van.

I recently did a little experiment on using 89 octane instead of 92 (I usually got about 1 mpg less on 89 - the final cost was about the same) and I calculated my mileage in the mid 20s. Most of my drive to and from work in on the highway. I rarely get caught in thick traffic and I add 4psi to my tire pressure than recommended (32/36).

So I no longer believe the 32 mpg the display showed. If the OP actually calculated his mileage - good for him. He's getting much better mileage than I've heard of.

Well, here is a picture (sorry for crappy quality). I am driving an automatic.
The 67 average speed is because I was driving in slow traffic for some time.
I tend to believe this indication (+- 1-2 mpg) because I calculate my consumption by hand at the pump every time. I haven't tried to refulel/calculate immediately after getting 32+ mpg though.
Of course as Glyn said, over the longer run it will be worse because I usually drive every day for a short distance (it barely manages to warm up).
