There is an advantage to having the plate where it should be, the plate and holder takes the taps when people are parallel parking, if you compare my front bumper to my rear, although I have had to replace the plastic cover half dozen times on the front it still looks new, the rear is another story. I live in a major city where most of the parking is on street parallel and most people can not park with out tapping the cars in front and behind, while I have parking sensors and it is not me making the damage...who's idea is to paint the bumpers the same as the body paint in the first place, leaves no room for scuffing or rubbing.
Unfortunately it is too late for me but if I am leaving my car in one spot for long time I put on my trailer hitch...wish I did that when I got the car when it was new, would have eliminate those inbedded holes and scratches from the other people
I didn't want to put holes in the bumper so I never installed it.
We've been running with no plate for 3+ years, but my wife got pulled over the other day with a warning to install the plate.

Drilling holes through the plate sounds like a plan, but it might get you in trouble with law enforcement maybe?

$50 bucks!?! Man...grab a tow eye - chop off the end, weld on a bar and paint it black. Done.
