2001 C240
New to the forums-just picked uo a 2001 C240
Hey y'all, I just bought myself a '01 C240, a little bit of a fixer-upper, but pretty darn clean. She has 220k on her, 6 speed manual tranny, paid 1900 total (tax, title, everything)...needs fluids, tires first off, but then going to tackle the front suspension after that. Found a set on ebay for 279 that includes control arms, tie rods, links, all the fun stuff...
So doing fluids, is there a certain type of coolant I should be using when I do a flush n fill...and is there anything I should be aware of when ripping apart the front suspension? Also, anything else I should know thatmay not be in the stickies?

Be carful with cheap ebay parts when it comes to the suspension you will be doing the job again very soon. I have seen many people on here buy non OEM/OES parts and have to redo the job a short time later I am one of them ![Frown](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Use the proper coolant I can't remember the name but a quick search on here will tell you. It can be hard to find locally but the dealers price is not to bad. Make sure when working on the car use the approved fluids (list can be found in sticky) as well as OEM/OES parts RMEUROPEAN, pelicanparts are two very good parts sites that will become your friend and offer both OEM parts as well as OES and name brand alternatives for very good prices.

The coolant trey is thinking about is Zerex G-05.

I went with MB 'kewl' blue coolant.![Cool](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif)
Another thing is brake fluid. Some use OEM, some use ATE Blue/Gold.

samaritrey, just curious, how long did the ebay control arms go before failing?
Trying to figure out the price/life ratio for those kits on ebay.

I believe they lasted around 15,000 miles while the OEM/OES lasted around 100,000. The karlyn or something like that also lasted about the same as ebay ones.

For the ATF try shell 134 it can be found for around $5 a quart if you can find a shell distributor near you or Ryder (truck company).

Dont forget Pentosin CHF-11s for the power steering system (about $20 from NAPA) and NO BURNOUTS! LOL. Bite the bullet the first time and get as much oem stuff as you can (air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, etc) then as you get to read and find out more on here you can choose to use other stuff based on forum experience! Good luck!

2001 C240
Hey thank for all the replies, appreciate the assistance. Got 8 quarts of Mobil 1 euro 0w-40 with an STP filter and heading to the dealer for coolant...I found a place with a 33k mile wrecked c240 I think I may get control arms from (better to go used genuine than new aftermarket, IMO)...gonna keep working on her when I get time, I think I'll really like this car once I get all the kinks fixed...

Congrats. These cars are surprisingly easy work on for the most part and there are tons of good DIYs here on the forums. So far I've tackled everything I needed to do so far on my C280 thanks to the folks here on the forum. Genuine fluids and parts is the key here and the fleece filter holds up better than most other paper filters (which the stupid dealership put in mine).
BTW how does the manual shifter and clutch feel in that Benz? I've driven a 6MT Audi A4 B6 before and the shifter was smooth but the clutch was quite heavy.
