Coolant Warning light, Battery/Alternator Warning
Hello,
I am new to the site and wanted some feedback, I searched the forum and couldn't find much on these two problems together.
Car: 2005 C230 Kompressor 140,000 Miles
Last week while driving to work my Check Coolant Level light came on, I told myself i'd check it later once I get home. I totally forgot and the warning light never came back on.
This past Tuesday I was driving to the gym and my Battery/Alternator light came up and the smell of burning rubber ( most likely serp belt) and some smoke. I immediately pulled over checked belt was fine waited a few minutes. I was about 1/2 mile from my home drove home fine.
I put car in Dyno and checked voltage
off 12.5
idle 13.4-13.5
figured that was fine Battery is less than 6 months old, Alternator replaced at a shop roughly 3-4 years ago.
i took off serp belt and none of the pulleys lock, but the water pump makes small clicking sound not all the time you have to spin it here and there and different speeds to get to click.
Now I am going to replace the water pump but im debating of actually replacing the alternator as well since im working on the vehicle already.
Was the battery/alt light maybe due to water pump issue or are they 2 seperate things?
Also should I do any other routine maintance items?
Thanks

Did you check the actual coolant level? If it is OK, then the sensor may be the culprit. While the serp belt is off, make sure to check the alternator pulley, it should free wheel in one direction only. A seized alt pulley will create issues for other unrelated pulley-driven systems.

Not sure if the windshield washer fluid has anything to do with the alternator/battery warning light?
The pulley on the alternator spinned freely in both directions so i replaced it along with the water pump.
So i tested the alternator in dyno mode 12.4 off 13's on idle and 14.2 while running.
Now the battery/alternator warning light still comes on????? When I start the car it bogs for a second light comes on and car idles fine after that any suggestions?

MBWorld Fanatic!
Just wondered whether the voltage regulator is at fault & is asking for more just when the car starts?.
You could put a voltmeter across the battery when starting.

The VR is new on the Alternator... but could be a possibility. What im i looking for when putting a voltmeter across battery when starting?
Being that the alternator and battery are new should i be concerned the message comes on sporadically.
