My experience with Castrol...

Yes, another oil thread. So, after long time use of M1 0w40 I thought I'd try something different, namely the MB-approved Castrol 0w30. Within a couple of days of the oil change, I began to get lifter noise especially when the car sat for more than a day or so. At first I thought it was due to the cold nights thickening up the oil etc but it's been warm in south TX last several days and this persisted. At this point I had about 500 miles on the Castrol and would get lifter noise on pretty much every cold start. So couple of days ago I changed back to M1 and even though temps were low 30s last night, no lifter noise.
Just FYI, not bashing Castrol, just didn't work for me.

Very interesting...and all these happened at the same place...just trying to figure out if you parked your car on a hill or something and then heard lifter noise with castrol oil.
Castrol is usually very good oil, thats why Im asking...also it depends on wich viscosity your motor runs...so you just could have bought to thin oil.
Just saying...

I've had no problem with Castrol since I switched. I really don't think that MB would recommend it otherwise, though it's certainly possible to get a bad batch of any oil.

I have no doubt castrol is a good oil, I'm just as surprised at the fact that the motor suddenly developed a lifter tick right after the oil change. The ticking was pretty consistent, different temperatures didn't make a difference. Oil level was good too, checked it on the dash, 5.1L when cold. My m271, like many others here, is gravelly and noisy when started cold, but with the castrol it was all that plus a pretty loud lifter tick that would last 10+ seconds even in 65+ degree weather. Should have made a video...

On a flipside, I would think 0w40 is better than 0w30 in the heat of the summer.

All a matter of viscometrics ~ not quality. There is nothing wrong with Castrol products. Lighter oils will drain back from lifters more quickly & take longer to pump up. Especially if there is some wear.
