Post ASP Pullies

How long was the Pulley on the car?
Who did the Install? Please take Pics of the Center!
Did The Welds fail? or did the Stock Pulley fail?
I Would Contact the Shop/person that did the Install to find out what failed....ASAP!

I installed the pulley in november of last year. I sent it to install it with a mechanic shop near to my house. I went to talk with them and said that they need to check tha car to know what happens but probabbly ir was the pulley that fail. It was the ASP pulley the one with the problem. i will post some pics when i know how to reduce the size to 1k thanks for the interest.

In your sig you said you have ASP alloy pulley, so you have the aluminum version? Because from my understanding the modified stock core version didn't come out until mid this year, and you said you had it on sine Nov of last year...

Yup! Hopefully yours is not the one with the steel hub and attached by set screws.

The new version modifies the stock pulley with a bigger steel ring welded on the OD.

From my point of view the new version is the safest you can get, but some people argues that it is not from the top brand names so it is not reliable either.

I've heard of one failure of the new ASP version, but it failed on the stock part after 3 hours of usage, not the ASP modified portion. I see this as more of an installation problem.

No the size is not 1 kb, it is 1 byte!! It is impossible to shrink anything down to below 1 byte! You can email me the pic.

Sorry this happened to you. I know it can be disturbing. Do you know if it's the all alloy pulley (all black with a steel band around the small hub) or alloy/steel combo (steel center area held in with about 6 screws, the rest is black). You can e-mail it to me and I'll post it. carl@buellwinkle.com

Woo~ fellow you have the oldiest all aluminum pulley! Now I'm not surprised because there was one reported failure on that pulley a long time ago and it failed at the exact location as yours. And I also did a stress analysis which predicted the same results.

From what I saw your damage is not that bad and can be fixed easily.

Maybe I didn't see clear from the pic: was there obvious damage to the engine block?

Damage the Iron Beast that is the M111? I think not. That pulley could have disintegrated into hundreds of shards big and small and nothing would have happened to the block. I'd look for damage to the woodruff key, the seal, and contamination of the other accessories from small slivers of metal or shavings...

If the key and seal are intact, get the new version bolted up, and away you go....

Somebody know how can i get out the head od the aluminium pulley out of the keyhole of the block. Remember the the pulley brake exactly over the surface of the key of the engine

I guess you can't post more than 1 byte pics so I loaded up on buellwinkle.com to display here. The pulley is the original all alloy ASP pulley that was recalled for this very reason. Sorry to hear that it happened....

There's no easy way without at least pulling the engine out of the car and pulling the crankshaft out. It maybe possible to pull the oil pan out and pound it out from the inside but you may damage the crankshaft. You'll never pull it out from the front, it's on there tight and you have no way to grip it. The first/only person to have this happen had to replace the crankshaft and that was several thousands of dollars at an MB dealer. Don't know what you can do but if it happened to me and it may cost $3,500 for a salvage C32 motor, maybe $2,500 for a C320 motor and a couple of thousand to put it in. That maybe cheaper than trying to fix this and you would have added value to the car by making a C320 coupe or C32 coupe.

Seems like nothing had been damaged other than the pulley itself, or maybe the key. Aluminum is soft, so I'd say use dremel or something to cut some grooves on the broken collar and then carefully pry it out using a prybar and some WD40.
