It's a totally redesigned engine - 4 valves per cylinder w/ direct inject and variable intake and exhaust cam adjustment. It produces 272hp and 350nm(258 lb./ft.) That is 100% confirmed from a variety of sources.

Here's an article that describes how the various direct injection motors from the European marques require essentially sulfur-free fuel to work - as direct injection necessitates the use of a special type of catalytic converter.

This type of fuel isn't readily available in the United States, which is why I don't think we'll get this motor here until our fuel changes. Our diesel fuel is supposed to change to low-sulfur in a couple of years (I think in 2006) so we'll finally be able to get some of the cool Mercedes diesel motors; hopefully, the gasoline content in sulfur will also go down sometime in the future as well.

Yeah, I was just thinking the other day, while playing mad scientist, with my discovery channel mini chemistry lab, that the sulphur would be so much more useful if it didn't have so much darn gasoline in it
