Issues with Crank Pulley (other models thankfully)

Just thought I might bring this over here.
Something to be aware of...possible failure of the pulley where the rubber meets the steel...so far so good for us...
but with people welding rings on the outside...well...who knows?
Any failures for anyone here with a stock pulley?

They have had problems with the 3.2L motor's pulley for years, this is not new (although that investigation maybe new). It does not affect the W203 because that 3.2L is from 2001, after they corrected the problem. Never heard of this hapening to any other MB motor with a factory pulley or a modified one. It would be bad if they damper came off as it can gouge into the block/oil pan and cause rapid oil loss. From what I've heard over the years is that most people catch it quickly enough so there's no damage other than the pulley itself.

Go here to post a complaint with the U.S. government. It appears an investigation has been started but the more complaints, the more likely all effected vehicles will get recalled.

I'm still wondering what happened to the guy who's new style ASP pulley shredded at the hub....can't seem to find the thread anymore. ???

I'm surprised those people had to PAY for that crap.
2 grand for one guy....I woulda made their lives a living hell if they stuck me with a 2 grand bill for the failure of an unmodified pulley.

OMG! Wow, just read that thread...amazing how they lied about ever seeing it....
Before buying my C Coupe, I had looked at Bimmers, but a mechanic buddy of mine pretty much scared me off of buying a used one...and the C Coupe was a little more affordable, and to me, more attractive (everyone has a damn 3 series...I'd be just another Bimmer troll).

I was pleasantly surprised that a NEW Mercedes was closer within reach than a base bimmer with less power.
And expected that it would be Sooooo reliable, and 'the world's best engineered car'.
So far so good for me,, well for the most part, I mean my car has spent about 2 months at the dealership in 2 years. But Ihad a loaner the whole time and they fixed everything I asked them to.

A guy I know just bought a CL500. Talked about how reliable his old s560 was. I could only laugh. Them was the days of mechnical control....today it;s ALL about the computers.

Al I can say is I'm glad I bought the extended warranty....but
am I allowed to ANY of my own service? Oil changes? Brakes?
I mean as far as my 'qualifications' I've been working on cars for over 20 years.

I'm amazed that reading comprehension is so poor for some people. The ASP pulley that 'shredded' at the hub was ALUMINUM. Meaning it was the first gen pulley, that was recalled. His apparently came from someone who elected not to return it, but sell it instead.

Turn the paranoia down a notch or two please. ANYTIME you modify a system, wether it be a engine or computer, or even your washing machine, there can be problems. Its a risk. Doesn't matter what you're modding.

There was new style pulley that broke.
Nothing wrong with my comprehension.
Easy on the attitude bud.

Yes, C230 Sport Coup is correct, someone installed the new, factory damper based pulley and it broke within hours at the hub. From what I know he got the pulley replaced by ASP and someone else was going to be installing it. The mechanic complained that the belt was too tight so it was likely installation error, afterall, that's an MB part that broke but I've seen factory pullies with cracks in the hub. BobDole is an example of an unmodified factory pulley (that came with the car) with a cracked hub. As Outland said, there is always risk, even with factory parts, that's why you have warranties.
