C240 W203 CAN drain on Clusters
Hi all
I have a 2004 W203 C240. I has a drain of about 1amp so drains in a couple of days if left.
My friend who is a merc mechanic, hooked it up to a STAR yesterday and did a drain test with a multimeter over the fuses.
He found fuse 42 for the instrument cluster to be where the drain was coming from. He thinks it is a can problem in the cluster. When you pull the fuse you get a 0.017 amp drain which I guess is normal.
I am in two minds what to do to solve the problem. I could send my speedo off to be repaired, or buy a set off ebay but a bit of research last night showed that this is not so straight forward due to mileage problems and fuel gauge problems.
Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Exactly the same problem. I have a question for you. If you take fuse #42 out while not driving, does your batter still drain? I tried this but mine still got drained, so I am confused if that was the real reason.

update.
Sent the instrument cluster off to be repaired. However the canbus is damaged from a voltage surge and cannot be repaired.
Does anyone know if I can buy a second hand set on ebay and put these in the car, or do they have to be coded.

They have to be coded. And yes, they're expensive. Don't ask me how I know. 
If you do a search, I think that a couple of people have had some success with used units, but I'd be afraid to drive a car with a Frankensteined cluster.

The repair company that has the broken cluster, they said I can find a second hand one but it has to be the same year, petrol and auto. They can then get all the info off the old eeprom and put it onto the replacement cluster.
