strange noise on my C200K [video]
No, that's something else. The chain would be cheaper to replace though.
That is the cam adjuster rattling. New one is $750, or you can probably get a used one from the junk yard.

Has it just started or did you buy the car recently?
To change that you need to remove the valve cover, remove the exhaust sprocket (it is not adjustable), slack the chain and then remove/replace the adjuster sprocket. I believe you don't need to remove the camshaft.
I would say, since the price was good, start fixing other things first, then as you progress you'll figure if it is annoying enough that you want to replace it.
Good luck, and you will find mbworld helpful in fixing other issues!
How can I know which one is dead? Are both the same spare part?
I guess I'll try to find that on a crashed car... Was this exact same part used on other engine types?
Many thanks for your analyse!
I think I made a big mistake buying this particular car...

Possible wrong oil?
Check the colour of the oil, if it looks ..clean...well
If it is dark, change to the recommended oil and see if the noise goes away.
Viscosity is important to adjusters.

I just bought this car (cheap) with many things going wrong but I'm good at mechanics and decided to save it.
AC doesn't work, glass roof is blocked, all front silentblocs are dead...
I had a quick look but didn't start to work on it.
oil is at bottom level (dark as possible), their's not enought coolant, air filter is completely black : it shows that the hood has not been opened for ages.
(message on the computer says that B visit is 215 days late, no other message)
what kind of oil should I use now?
Viscosity? is 15w40 OK?
quality? is semi-synthetic OK?
I had planned to flush oil from engine and gearbox, change all filters, spark plugs and change all front suspension/direction bars...
Makes me XXXX to discover this adjuster problem but I'll do what needed finding used parts.
It's great to have you guys around!
Check on the sites or google oil requirement for your car, replace with factory oil filter, it sounds like the car has maybe not seen a tech in a while.
Check your owners manual if you have one or just ask on the forum
A semi-Synthetic would probably be okay for the flush or short service use to clean the motor. Once you go to full synthetic it is advisable not to go back to dino oil.
I run semi synthetic in a 02 Tiburon with no issue and no oil consumption. Fully Synth in the Benzs
M111 engines only have one adjuster sprocket. The other one is a "plain" sprocket, so you only have to change one. 2001-2003(?) C230's should have m111 motor. Not sure if w202s use the exact same sprockets.
will the system be the same as mine ?
I don't even know what is my engine type... M111, I guess 111955 (where can I find the info?)
any other parts that I could ask him?
:-)
Concerning my rattling noise:
I've flushed the old dirty dead oil, changed filter and refiled with synthetic 5w40 ELF 900evo that is "229.3"
That didn't solve the problem (chances where realy low)
So, now that I've found a used M111 cameshaft adjuster, I'm getting ready to get my fingers off the keybord and get dirty!
For those who have ever changed their chain, could you tell me what seals I need?
Is there a seal for the calorstat?
and for the plate that is in front of the cameshafts?
For the moment I have just planned to buy a seal for the cameshafts cover... but I'm sure I need more than that.
Thanks!
