Need to Buy Extended Warranty - How Should I do it?

I'll be over 50,000 miles on my 2002 C Coupe in less then a week and a half, and thus over my warranty. Anyone have sugguestions on buying the extended warranty?

-Should I buy it at my dealer (MB of Ft. Washington, PA)?
-Should I buy it at a different dealer?
-Can I buy it once the car goes out of warranty, should I need it?

-Marc

you should shop around if you have time, but in your case it seems you need to think fast..once your baby is at 50,001 you are unable to renew your warrnaty at your dealer..or atleast that is what my service manager said to me..its always good to have the warranty covering you..its like a added insurance on your car,,if your water pump or anything huge fails after 50 your wallets in trouble..most problem might happen after 50k..i think

I thought the extended warranty was only available for purchase for the first year of ownership? That's what my stealer told me, can someone confirm/deny this?

NO That is NOT True...You CAN get the Aftermarkit warranty up until 49,999 then the car Must be Inspected...for coverage

Its just the dealer has NOT made enough from you...Greed!

Lots of Aftermarkit Warranty Companies (INSURANCE COMPANIES)
out there that CAN save you some money..READ the Fine print before You Buy...and Coverage Items covered

Are you sure of this? We can roll into an MB dealer and purchase an extended warranty? They will inspect it, and thats it? 100,000 mile warranty?

I think what he was saying is that up to 49,999 you can just buy the warranty, 50,000 and after you would need to have it inspected first.

Yea my confusion was about whether one could purchase the MB extended warranty ONLY at purchase time of the car/or withiin the first year. SO if you have had the car for over a year, would you still be able to buy the MB extended warranty.

The MB extended warranty must be purchased in the first year of ownership. After that you have to go to the aftermarket, which really isn't a warranty, but insurance. There are several sellers. GE is one of them.

Lynn's right.
At least thats what I was told by all the dealers. 3 at least.
I bought my warranty on day 363 when I had decided that for certain I would be keeping it beyond 50K miles.
Figured my yearly mileage at a little over 15K a year, so went for the 6 year, 100K.
Had to follow up to make sure they got it into the computer before day 365.
So if you bought your 2002 in 2003, you could still have a chance and the best price on factory warranty is with Chico CA dealership.

All of the above
MarcGetty,

Lynn is correct. You can only extend the factory warranty within the first year of ownership. We have a few aftermarket warranty companies that we use when a car does not fit the criteria for an extension (yours) or does not fit the requirments for the Starmark "certified pre-owned MB warranty" (my 300CE when I bought it). I put a 2 yr/ 30,000 mile warranty on my 1991 300CE when I bought it 18 months ago w/ 90,000 miles. It was $1200 and has a $100 deductible. With 50,000 miles you can purchase a 3 yr. / 45,000 mile warranty on the same plan that I used.

PM me if you would like more info., we can do the paperwork by phone / fax.

Can the MB extended warranty be used at any MB dealers, or is it only at the dealer where you bought the warranty from?

Good question, I wonder the same thing. Im a bit nervous about aftermarket warranties, just because of all the horry stories or this and that not being covered for some X reason.

If your car still qualifies (less than 1 yr. from purchase date) then the MB warranty is the way to go. Any MB dealer will honor the MB warranty.

If it is more than one year from your purchase date then there is no choice but to use an aftermarket warranty. The company we use has been good. It is called a "Preferred" warranty, that's the one I have for my CE.

I took 364 days...lol. Actually they told me if I came the next day (1 year after purchase) they couldn't sell it. It must be before one year...I just made it.

That's right, my dealer can't sell me the MB extra 50,000 mile warranty (was $1800 to $2200, depending on who was telling me), they can only sell me a third party warranty for, get this $3200.00 USD!!!!

No thanks, I'm not paying 11% of the car's sticker for a 50,000 mile warranty. Kelly Blue Book lists the trade in value of my car at $12,250.00, the warranty is 26% of the cost of the cars value.

I think I'm going to gamble and go without the warranty. At $1800.00 I would go for it, but $1400 more then I expected it just not going to cut it.

The car is sitting at home (I'm driving the Scirocco today) with 102 miles until the warranty runs out. I have a service A appointment in 3 days, I hope I get it for free before I go over 50,000.

If you make your appointment before your warranty is up they usually honor it during the service even if it has expired at the time.

Im still deciding on the Extended myself. I have had practically no problems and I am wondering if there will be issues beyond $2000 with my car (Major or Cumulive of minor stuff) after the warranty expires. I don't think I will be needing it But who knows?
