Gas coming out of nozzle when filling

I've got a new problem with my 2006 C280... When I go to fill it with gas after a few seconds the pump kicks off and some gas splashes out of the filler head. The first time it happened I thought it was something wrong with the gas pump or nozzle I was using. Then it happened at the next fill up.

When I had the car in at MB of St. Louis for something else I had them look into this with very disappointing results. Basically, they don't know for sure what is wrong, and the options they have to do are expensive and they can't guarantee will fix the problem (and subsequently wouldn't be able to refund me if the repairs didn't resolve the issue).

They want to start with replacing the filler neck assembly, at a cost of almost $1200. He also mentioned that it could be evap canister or the tank itself. How in the world it could be the tank I don't understand. He explained that he doesn't like the situation and that they had another customer have the same problem. She opted for the evap canister replacement since it was the cheapest option and it didn't resolve her problem. She just lived with it (or traded it in like I'm thinking about doing).

If I pump very slowly it takes gas fine, so its mainly a patience issue at this point, but I can see it becoming a big annoyance after a while.

Anyone else ever had this happen? What would you suggest I do first?

Air must come out of the tank when you start filling up. It could be a ventilation mechanism is somehow restricted. Have you tried backing out the nozzle a little to allow air to escape out?

Yes, this helps slightly, but I still have to manually hold the trigger at almost the lowest possible setting to pump gas, but not have any spill out or have the nozzle auto shut off.

When I fill my car, most of the time I cannot put the nozzle all the way in the tank or it shuts off almost immediately. I back it out about 1/8" or so and I imagine this leaves room for air to escape the filler neck.

but then again it's probably against the law to allow fumes to escape out. Either try a different pump or check for constricted hoses that capture the fumes within the car's fueling system.

After battling this for a while my CEL finally came on. I took it into the dealer and sure enough, the evap canister needs to be replaced. I'm really curious to see if this also resolves the issue with being able to fill it properly. I really hope it does, because I'm not looking forward to a $1200 filler neck assembly job if this doesn't fix that too.

My car does this... kind of. I just don't get any backsplash.
If I'm at the POS Esso down the street, the pump will shut itself off after each second it's being pumped, so often I have to gently squeeze it to get any flow. However if I go to the good ol' Petro-Canada, I never encounter this issue. I assumed it's the pumps, but it's interesting seeing someone else with a similar issue.

I clicked "Today's posts" and found this.
Many W204 owners are having the same issues at the pump.

The procedure in Post#12 worked for us. Might worth a try!
