MagnaFlow Manifold/Catalytic Converter | 03-05 C230K

I know there's a healthy amount of individual threads covering this issue, but I have yet to see anyone using this specific part.

I'm coming up on 95K miles on the 05' C230K SS M271, and I may be in need of a new Catalytic Converter.

Symptoms:
- Rotten egg smell after I run the car hard.
- Unusually loud, somewhat of a clicking sound from around where the CC is.
- I get a "thumping" sounds when at idle (sounds like someone's hitting the car with their elbow from the trunk - No, I'm not a mobster ).

OEM replacement is outrageously expensive and the only option I see is this Magnaflow Exhaust Manifold/CC unit available for under $400. It seems relatively new to the market and I'm wondering if anyone this forum has any experience with this particular replacement part?

It looks to be completely bolt-on and doesn't require welding or cutting. Which means it's a DIY Help in this area would be greatly appreciated, as I'll document my experiences for the betterment of this forum for future DIY'ers.

I can't say I have it on my car - but I guess I can say I wish I did.

What's not to like? Stainless steel construction and emissions friendly. Go for it and let us know. I don't think you will be making a mistake by going with that system, especially for the price.

Thanks for your response.

My concern is not the overall exterior construction of the aftermarket part, but the positive/negative effects it would have on the vehicles native exhaust flow, as well as durability/longevity.

The price point sure is tempting though...

I don't think it will have a negative impact on performance. Magnaflow is a decent brand name and I've used their parts before on other vehicles - just not my C230. It sounds like your CAT may be plugging up on you (indicated by the sulfur smell) so it will need to be replaced and it's about half the price of the MB manifold and CAT.

Good to know, man. Thanks. Yeah, the only thing I'll need to do beforehand is make sure to fix the problem that's causing the CAT to go bad. MAF, Mixture Adaptation Ratios, Fuel Filter etc..

Dude, it's like a 1/3 of the price of OEM. Problem is I've tried like heck to find reviews on this Part on various sites and there's nothing/nada/zilch. It might be due to how new it is? Idk.. all I know is if I do it, I want to do it right.

Ps - Where in WI are you from? I grew up in Lake Geneva (Fontana) WI. Chicago Bears fan though.. Sorry not a cheese head lol.

It's not like your car is a 2015 or anything. You're well within the range for a cat to fail.
I have never seen that kind of combo for our cars before, so you may be right about no feedback. I did have a Magnaflow cat on my 02 for years and it worked like a champ. I wouldn't be too worried about quality from them.

You are correct, sir - 10 years is a long time.. Thanks for the feedback, Tommy.

I'm glad to see your CAT worked out for you. Since they're considered High-Flow, did you notice any performance changes? Additionally, did you replace both upstream/downstream O2 sensors as well?

Yes, I did. But I had Supersprint headers and an Eisenmann exhaust on my C coupe, so it was the weak link in the chain. All by itself with no mods on either end, I don't think much would be noticed, but I could be wrong.
Yes, replaced O2 sensors at the same time, as a CYA move.

You might not have an issue with the MAF, mixture, etc... It could just be time to replace the CAT. As far as reviews go, like I mentioned before, Magnaflow is a decent name brand - and you can trust what Tommy has to say as well. I say get it and run it - be the first to review it!

I'm around the Beaver Dam area - and I'm a Bears fan too!
