05 C230k balance chain broken please help
First of im new to this site have been looking at it for a while now just cant seem to find the information im looking for. looks to be a great site and a lot of good info.
I just bought a 2005 c230k as a project and found that the balance shaft chain is broken. I can find everything on the timing chain but no information on the balance chain. My 1st question does that chain run the oil pump as well. The previous owner stated it was running fine then had a loud clicking noise and then stalled out about a mile after the noise was herd. I noticed the timing marks are good on the cams but the crank shows 10 degrees. Only have the top end apart now but can see there is no chain on the inside sprocket. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, looking at this picture the oil pump seems to be there:

"When developing the new 4 cylinder engine M271, the Munich-based company Iwis Ketten was system development partner for the chain drives of camshafts and Lanchester drive. The results of this cooperation made it possible to achieve smaller measurements, reduced weight and lower noise levels." -- and shorter lifetimes apparently...

Thank you for the information I was hoping a different answer. Motor turns freely right now. Will tear it down to further investigate it this weekend. Does anyone have any information how to set timing with Balance shaft and timing chain.

Thank you that's exactly what I was looking for. Not sure if I will trying to put new ones on the motor or not since it broke while running. May have starved the engine causing it to stall. Either way if I buy a used engine I will need to replace the chains on that engine.

So it's the timing chain that has broken, while running. I believe this is an interference engine, which means bent valves (if this is a non-interference engine then you are golden). So worst case here is you need to have valves replaced and are doing a head job. There's a pretty good write up from a few years ago about this, in which he just buys a new head and changes the bad one out.

The balance shaft chain broke not the timing chain which now I understand that also drives the oil pump. Old owner drove vehicle about a mile after hearing the noise from the chain and then quite running.
