m271 water pump DIY is easy

(1) remove intake hose
(2) remove EGR hose (at least bottom and swing it out of the way)
(3) drain coolant from under radiator only
(4) remove serpentine belt from water pump area (pushed it to the right side)
(4) remove pump pulley, 4 bolts, E10 torx
(5) remove pump, 6 bolts, E10/E12 torx
(6) clean/scrape pump mating surface
(7) install new pump and gasket. I rubbed a trace of silicone grease on the gasket to make sure it sealed against the dry surfaces. Torque bolts.
(8) install pulley. Torque bolts.
(9) reinstall belt
(10) re-attach EGR hose to bottom
(11) replace intake hose
(12) close radiator drain plug
(13) refill coolant from reservoir
(14) start engine, bring to full temp, reservoir cap on or off, doesn't matter
(15) after thermostat is open (top radiator hose becomes hot), turn off engine
(16) wait for coolant level to drop inside reservoir, then top off.
You don't have to remove the intercooler(?) chamber, but a couple of the bolts are a bit hard to get to with the torque wrench because of it.
One thing that helped is that I saved the coolant that I drained out (was fairly new from recent o-ring leak fix), so that I knew exactly how much had to go back in. When I first filled the system I had about a quart of coolant left over, that was with the reservoir to the top. So there was a fair amount of air trapped inside the engine. When I brought the engine to temp and then shut it off, the coolant level in the reservoir dropped significantly, allowing me to pour in the remaining coolant. So ... even if you put in new coolant, it helps to know exactly how much you took out.
What took the most time in the above steps were (6) cleaning the mating surface, only because I took my time, and (14) waiting for the engine to come to full temp.
Sorry, no pics! There wasn't anything very tricky about this. with the intake hose and EGR hose out of the way, the water pump is in plain sight.

It shows one trick that I didn't use ... loosen and tighten the pulley bolts with the belt on as belt will hold the pulley firm. My bolts weren't stuck so I was able to just hold the pulley with my hand while working the bolts.
