How to remove the sump
I have a 2002 C220 estate with a 611 engine. I need to change a damaged piston. In order to do this the sump has to come off. The Haynes manual tells me to first lower the front suspension crossmember.(See chapter 10) however no mention of this part is in chapter 10. How do I do this? Can anyone help me with this information?

Yesterday a friend and I using his engine crane managed to remove the sump, replace the damaged piston and re install the sump using a new gasket with sealent. I just have to re fit the cylinder head and put the engine back together. The info put on this post by Playfair was excellent. Thankyou.
