Oil leak on m271 question pics

Has anyone dealt with oil coming from this location? Did you have to pull the engine?

Start off by inspecting vacuum pump at the back of the head. Notorious for leaking oil onto the top of the transmission. Do a search for the vacuum pump, it's been beaten to death here..

Its definitely not vacuum pump because i already fixed the pump. When i wipe that spot and then turn the engine on, i can see oil sipping through that exact spot, but not a lot, just enough for it to create a stain.

Wow that is one clean looking transmission housing.

I have the exact same leak. Suspect it is the rear main seal but am too cheap to drop the tranny. I can concur that as far as I can tell, mine is also not caused by a faulty vacuum pump which I replaced a while back.

Just curious, how much oil does your engine go through (outside of regular changes) at this point? I find I have to add 1L every 3000km or so. Can't tell if it's leaking out from there or if most of it is actually being burned.

Surprisingly not much at all, about 0.1 quart every 3000 miles.. It doesn't leak bad quite the opposite actually but it just annoying to have that stain 😁

Mine just went away by itself after a few months. I suspect mine was just residue from the leaking vaccum pump which was replaced and permanently fixed a short time before the stain first showed up.

Is your vacuum pump leaking?

I replaced my vacuum pump months ago and I checked the bottom of the pump it's dry no oil so it's not the culprit.. i'm still loosing about 1L every 5K miles or so. I wipe the area clean and the oil reappears so it's coming from that area. FCP Euro has the seal for $4 so just wondering if any actually did the procedure yet seeing what tools etc... is needed to perform.
