Unhappy how much to install springs?

hey just a question, i got a quote from my dealership on installing my H&R springs... they told me it could cost upto $3000 CND. IS THAT RIGHT? it only cost me $250 for my miata and $65 for my wheel allignment. BUT $3000 !!!! they said it's that much because "apparently there is a lot of adjusting and modifications to do". i would rather that the dealership do it because i don't trust the local tuner shops with my benz BUT i can't pay that much for an install. What do you think i should do...take it to the tuner shop or pay the dealership? i sorta regret buying the springs now....

note: to those who have springs, where did you guys go to get them installed? and how much?

Well canadian money isn't worth what it used to. My MB dealer in Laguna Niguel, CA wanted $270 US to install the H&R springs and re-align the car. Offer him US dollars and see if the price goes down

I installed my springs myself. It wasnt that hard, I just paid to get them compressed which wasnt much. $5-10 per strut. I forget. I did it a few times. My fronts are now cut 1 coil because it was so damn high. Still is. Anyways my dealer aligned my car for around $100. No problems so far and its been almost a year since I lowered it.

I've been under the car more than a few time.

These suspensions are standard stuff. Changing the springs on these cars is as easier (or easier) than it is on any other car.

Even $300 US seems high to me for the job. With a rented ($10) spring compressor, this looks like a 1 hour job to me.

Hi Silentrage,

You are in Calgary right...?
I have a friend that can install if for you for approximately $100-200. He is the ONLY mechanic that I would trust with my car. He is very busy because he spends lots of time fixing the Rally cars for the local rally races in Alberta. He has worked on many of my friend's car such as Supra TT's, NSX, BMW M3, Lexus, etc. and you can watch him as he works on your car. When I get the Kleeman pulley, he will be the person that will be installing it for me.

I've never installed aftermarket spring on my cars before, but from reading other posts, it looks like you might have get an Alignment after the installation of the springs.

Personally, I think the Dealerships are rip-offs. When I purchased my car, I has asked for a price on a set of steel rims with 16" winter tires and I was quoted a price of $2000.00. So I ended up purchasing Aluminum wheels with snow tires from the Tire Rack for $1600.00 (includes shipping, tax, etc.)

Let me know if you are interested and I will introduce you to my friend.

I had my H&R springs installed, about 45 min outside of Vancouver, for $306 cad at an independent Mercedes repair shop. They did excellent work.

My only guess to this mystery of $3,000 cdn or $2,000 US is that the dealer though they were supplying the parts and they were quoting coil overs which are more money than just springs. Just a speculation. Some dealers purposely quote you very high to politely make you go away. Sounds better than a NO.

I had a mecanic in my area do it that works on mercedes all the time at first i was nervious that he never worked on a car like this but when he opend the garadge to pull it in he had 4 ferraris in there that he is working on to and they were all new. and no i never had and problems with them he did a great job. i had it alligned at tire kingdon and they did a good job but they had to replace my bushings because the cambers were fu*k*d.
but if u have a good place do it all u will have no problems its really not to complicated.

good luck

i hope they don't think i was buying them the springs from them because i told them that i had already purchased them and was wondering how much the install was. BUT the "make you go away" thing might be true...hmmmm it took them about two weeks to get an estimate on the install job.

hey yellow_fly_red, i would totally appreciate it if you could introduce me to your friend. i really don't want to take my car to any old tuner shop and since you would trust your car with him, i feel comfortable with him doing the install. thanx so much for the hook up (i owe you one), this is my email addy if you need it. bbmoto@hotmail.com

You are in Los Angeles, why would you even consider paying $270 for installation and alignment? Try Globe Motorsports, Performance Plus in Gardena.
If you already have the springs, then $200 more max.
If you are buying the springs new $400 for everything.........
Caliber like many dealerships have specials and coupons..$89.00
