2006 c280
Fuel pump sending unit

Hello! I've got a 2006 c280 with an in tank fuel filter that i guess is a part of the sending unit because it's not behind the wheel well cover. It was really hard to get that ring off to get to the pump and I'm not very excited about getting the other side off so I havent tried to peek in there n see. Anyway its stuck in limp mode and getting fuel pressure codes (po453) I recently had to replace the fuel pump so I'm thinking it's highly likely that it just needs a filter and that the pressure from a clogged one is what burned out my pump. Anyway what I'm wondering is if u can clean these filters to try to sneak another year out of them without having to replace the whole sending unit. If anybody could help me that would b so awesome. I'm so tired of watching long obnoxious videos on youtube and realizing 45 minutes of wasted life later theyre for cars not the same as mine. Also...I replaced a missing vacume line with a spark plug wire I pulled off the parts laying around from dads cutlass so dumb it down a little. I'm trying.

With the right tools the ring comes off easily!
Drive a Mercedes and you want to clean your fuel filter? Really!

Good luck

Fuel filters aren't very expensive at all. Why not just replace it? Any mechanic can do this job easily under 1h. In fact it can be DIYed within this time too.

As for P0453, a quick search online shows the following causes:
  • Defective Fuel Tank Sending Unit
  • Defective or damaged Fuel Tank
  • Defective Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor, wiring, or computer
  • Defective Carbon Canister
  • Defective Canister Vent Valve - (won't open)

The in-tank filters are expensive because you have to replace the entire sender unit inside the tank (left side). It's about $250 or so. But there is another issue with replacing it. Often, the connection on the fuel pump (right side of the tank) have become brittle with age and when you try to disconnect the hoses leading from it back to the sender, the plastic nipples break and now you need a new fuel pump.

Just did a quick search. For a 2006 C280 the fuel filter is outside the car (just like all 2001-2006 W203s) and is very easy to replace. It's only in 2007 that they moved it inside the tank. If OP had a filter inside the tank, it would've also been replaced when she replaced her fuel pump.

Yeah, there are some with internal filter in the sender unit, others are external. I thought the M272 engines had it internal, but maybe not the C280.
