Smile Questions about my C230

I am new to Mercedes Benz and I just purchased a 2002 C230 four days ago. I fell in love with the car as soon as I drove it. I am having a couple of problems with it, and I was wondering if anyone out there had any information on it.

The car has 300 miles on it. When you are driving down the road, steady on the gas, the car starts coasting, as if you have let off of the gas completely. Sometimes it picks back up by itself, sometimes you have to pick up off of the pedal and press back to get it to go again. It happens randomly, no rhyme or reason to it at all. It will go 10 miles without doing it, and then do it 20 times within 2 miles.

Also, I live in a mid-sized city, and the car will only pick up 1 station on the radio. I have the factory Mercedes system. Any other car that I get into wil pick up tons of stations. I was wondering if I could change something to make the system work better.

Can anyone direct me to where I can buy any performance parts for the car?

Thanks for any help in advance. I still love the car despite the problems.

Angie

I always go for the obvious first --- as to the accelerator

Make sure any carpeting or mat is not getting in the way of the accelerator.

Then. look down there and see if anything else is preventing it from releasing Push it up and down (while car is off).

If that doesn't work, maybe someone will post a better idea, or make friends with an MB service advisor

As to the radio, have you RTFM (Read The Freaking Manual)?

Congrats on your purchase and have fun -- there is a list of tuners somewhere on the forum board -- click around -- but you might want to ask a separate question as to what are the common mods and which companies. I would start with nonperformance mods -- like a clearbra (www.stongard.com) or euro side mirrors (for eliminating blindspots) -- I wanted to ask myself where one purchases these.

Antenna

is located inside the rear window. Don't know of any way of improving it, other than moving to Cleveland. I do agree that it doesn't pull in stations too well.

I have no idea about the coasting issue - that's a new one to me. Could be a slushbox or throttle wiring issue. I'd give it until 1,000 and see if it goes away on its own.

What kind of performance parts are you looking for? There are several companies that specialize in MB products. Browse through the performance board, and see what's discussed there.
I don't know what car you came from, but you'll probably be disappointed by the selection and price.

I am thinking that you may have inadvertantly turned on your cruise control. Make sure your have it turned off and see if the problem goes away. Sounds like your anntena is not completely installed correctly or there is a short in the line, you should have at least average reception. for that you will need to visit the dealer.

I have tried everything with the accelerator. I thought that it was the cruise control, but that didn't help. I guess that it is a problem with the wire. I was wondering if it was a common thing or if it was specific to my car.

The performance parts that I am looking for are suspension pieces, pulleys, ets..... I found KLeemann, not sure of the prices or any of that yet. Like I said, I am new to Mercedes. I came from an NSX and Japanese cars, where you can find performance parts on every block in town.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome!

Some people have had issues with their antenna's and the dealer has been able to fix it, search on "antenna" and you should find some help. My antenna is the strongest I have ever had in a car, so I would think there is something wrong.

I have no clue about the coasting issue, but your should give it a few more miles and then take it in.

Good luck.

Beth

Oh yeah, this coasting thing. I assume we're talking an auto here- what happens when you gas it? The motor revs up, as if it were in neutral? Sounds very strange- is this in auto/man mode toggling the gears or just in drive? Heard many complain about the radio's reception- I'm content with mine- eg. I can pull in NYC stations from about 40 miles away no problem. I'd take it in at any rate and get your loaner why not, right?

The car is a manual trans. It doesn't rev, it is just like it coasts. I have it scheduled to go in next Wednesday.

As far as the speed thing from the NSX to the C230....I used to drive the NSX ont eh street everyday, now it's mainly a track car. I drive it on the street every now and then. Sometimes the Mercedes is a nice change. You don't have to watch where you pull into due to dragging the bottom, etc......

Thanks for the help.

radio reception

Welcome - neighbor. I am in Toledo and have not seen another Coupe on the road since I took delivery in early March.

I am happy with the radio reception. It is the same or better than my previous vehicles.

I have never experienced any problems after 5800 miles, but the ESP can be annoying when not de-activated during an aggressive manuver. No other complaints.

- Will

Hi Will!

I have seen a couple of coupes on the road, but only passing on the highway. Did you buy your car at Vin Devers?

Welcome to the forum Angie. My brother worked for a high performance tuner shop in Findlay. I don't know if they deal with Mercedes, however.
