Interior plastic decomposing

A customer asks if anyone has had any problems with plastic interior parts decomposing and crumbling apart. Especially the storage compartment above the console and the plastic around the console area. Thanks

2004 C320 Sport, no issues whatsoever.

The main thing that has gone bad is everything with that "soft touch" rubberized compound, such as the volume knob on the radio. That stuff turns to goo over time. I went over all those surfaces with rubbing alcohol and got rid of it.

The other stuff that went bad on me was the seat trim (the large panels behind the adjustment knobs and hinges). The original plastic is some crappy ABS that turns brittle. The updated pieces from the dealer are made with a different (more flexible and noticeably tougher) grade of plastic. I've swapped out pieces as they broke on me.

The plastic tray below the radio is still immaculate if that's what you're asking.

MB’s of all kinds.
01-04 will have that issue. However, there were some that have not. Very rare but they are the cream puffs like the one pictures above.

Yes, with just barely 60K original miles on the clock, I would indeed consider my son's 2004 C320 to be a CREAM PUFF.

A factory fitted (OEM or not) sunshade and the OEM side blinds are a every summer add on.

Shoot, I use the front blind if out parked long in any sunny/uv weather...

Yep! Absolutely same issues with my 2003 C230K. I just today replaced the storage cubby, which was a long time coming. Much better. It was an easy DIY job.

I lived in FL for a while and the car got a ton of sun, so the melting and degradation has been an issue for at least 4 years now.

Living in Northern CA, I ALWAYS put sunshades in the windshield when parking, rain or shine. I also slightly tint all of my cars to keep the UV Rays from getting to the interior.

Most people think that the sunshades are only to be used in the summer in order to keep the heat out. It is however not only the heat that tears up any interior, it is also the UV Rays that deteriorate plastics and leather. AND, ...... UV Rays exist any day, even if the sun does not exactly "shine".
