What is or are spike spiders? Is that some sort of tire chains? Easy to put on? Where can I get those? I probably wont be going with the full winter tires setup since I live in So. Cal, but I "might" need chains on occasions.
Thanks

Spikes-Spider link

They go on quick but are expensive compared to chains or cables.

C Coupe Bike Racks

I found a few threads in here about the C coupe MB bike rack, but I never saw any pictures with an actual bike attached. Does anyone have any such pictures?

Also, has anyone else tried the Yakima rack for the C coupe? Their website claims they make one and it's significantly less expensive than the MB one ($218 vs. $268), but I don't know how well they fit or what they even look like. Pics of these are welcome as well.

I'd like to know this too, but with an all glass roof will it work?
For now I fold down the seats and take off the front wheel.

Well, here's what it looks like on "build your own."

Not sure how accurate it is.

My dealer has one on the lot with the racks. I suppose if you're going to do a rack, it's pretty nice. The MB rack has a very clean, uncluttered look to it, with all the hardware hidden fairly well when compared to Yakima, Thule, etc. I don't know which company's accessories will fit on the bars-I didn't look at it that close, but I'm sure it's made to take either Yakima or Thule.

I'd like to know this too, but with an all glass roof will it work?

Look closely at the doors, and just over the small rear window. There are indentations (and cutaways in the seal) for a rack. The rack supports come nowhere close to the glass. And the sunroof should still be fully operational.

I have the MB basic rack and two sets of ski/snowboard attachments. Everything is kept high enough that the sunroof still functions fine. I could only see an issue if you were to carry a snowboard upside down with high back bindings not folded down.

Does anyone have the bike rack?

I was looking online and it says:

2004 Accessories
Bicycle Carrier
You can easily attach up to three of our bike carriers to our basic carrier (sold separately). Each bike carrier holds one bike and securely attaches to the frame of your bicycle without the need to remove the front wheel.
So that means I need the $189 bike carrier and the $265 basic carrier? Thats seems very expensive.

Am I mistaken?

I was going to get it until I saw the darn price. You have to buy the rack first, then of course a carrier for each bike. I have two bikes that with the front tire removed and the seats folded fit perfect in the trunk of the coupe. Gotta love the hatch for that purpose alone. A rack for the two would be over $500 and it is not worth it in my opinion.

IMHO the rack is worth the extra money (MB includes the locks, also). I have a Thule set up for another car and, while it is nice, too, the MB set up is perfect. Each foot pod is a unique casting that fits in locations built into the car (the gap in the seal over the rear window, tiny arrows stamperd into front door opening). The rubber contact patch is small and on the ridge. You never have to measure or adjust when attaching it. The extruded aluminum crossbars are superior to Yak,s tubes or Thule's bars. The bike carriers are a good value, too. One big flaw is the omission of a lock where the bike carrier attaches to the crossbar. A thief could unscrew the knobs and walk off with the bike and carrier still atteched to one another. I just cable the bike to the bars if I'm worried.

I think Thule makes the MB ones.

I don't think it's a good idea with the pano sunroof.

Anyone have a factory roof rack?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to get one for a bike attachment. If anyone has a M-B rack system or another brand, will the front crossbar be directly over the sunroof?

Cool Bike carrier

hey,
I recently bought the MB OEM basic roof carrier and bicycle attachment. Unfortunately I can't find information on the best way to mount the bike carrier to the roof rack and most importantly how to lock the arm of the bike carrier to the bike.
Does anyone here have experience with this. Any pictures would help.
Thanks in advance.
Mike

The box should have contained instructions showing how to attach the carrier to the base rack. Locking is another story. What MB delightfully forgets to tell you is that the (ever so expensive) racks don't come with locks. They are a separate purchase. You buy them in a batch of two or four. Guess most folks buy the carriers that way. Two locks will cost less than $10.

Are the locks specific to the bike carrier? I didn't have any instructions that came in the package specifically for the bike carrier. I guess I just need to get in touch with my stealership. Do the locks have a specific name.

Does anyone have any pics of their bike on the rack or any experience driving on the highway... it says not to exceed 55mph?
thanks
Mike

bike rack

The bike rack for my 230SS is a Subaru Forester.
If you have a sunroof that you like to open you won't anymore due to wind noise. I would take it back and buy one of the better rear racks that is easily removed when you are not using it (like the Saris Bones rack).
I've been a serious road and mountainbike racer for a long time and even though I liked the convenience of a roof rack when I had one it isn't worth the noise.

I've used both. What kind of bikes will you be carrying? I've got Yakama for my coupe. I use fork mounts because I don't mind taking the ft wheel off. If you have some thru axle freeride monster, I don't know what you would use. You need to take the roof rack off every once and while or grit gets under the feet and grinds into the paint.

I've got a Kona Caldera and Da Boy has got a Kona Makena and I have no desire to take off the front wheels. Plus I have an old Nishiki that I converted into a track bike but I really want to buy one of these:
