Winter Wheels (planning ahead)

Ok, call me weird (opening the floor to criticism)

I can't see spending hundreds of dollars for winter wheels and at the same time I don't want to subject my C7 wheels to harsh winter roads...

SOOOOO

Has anyone seen a source for good old fashioned 16" black steel wheels for Mercedes? I had them for my GTI, Passat, and my friend had 'em on her TT. I think they look cool.

Tirerack sells them. I think they are about $50 apiece.

Tirerack does sell winter tire packages with very basic steel wheels, some even with hubcaps. But, do you really want something that drab (ugly!!!) on your car for 3 - 4 months of the year?

I almost got steelies until I learned they cost $50 each. Plus hub caps (optional). Plus you need new lug-bolts right?

I sprang for the alloy take-offs for $105. I'm not crazy about the looks, but it's better than the steels. Also, I think it would be easier to sell the take-offs later rather than the steels.

advice

If you're driving in real winter country, where they put gravel on the road, don't waste your money on alloys, even if they're only $40 more than black steelies. The rear wheels will get pulverised by flying rocks thrown up by the front tires, which is why you don't even want hubcaps on the steelies. You may want to think of mudflaps too, as ugly as they are...

As for steelies being "gay", it sounds you have some issues to deal with, KJ-TypeR

Serious winter drivers in Canada all have 4 steel wheels with good snow tires on them from October through the end of the ski season. Check out the parking lot at Whistler or Lake Louise sometime. Most of these drivers are not gay (5-10% - tops - are, just like everywhere...)

I got pricing within a few $ of mail order from my trusty local 3rd generation family owned tire shop. Steels were $55, Nokian Tires were $125, and i can swing by to have them swap them over for free.
