Question: factory alarm system.

Does anybody here have one on their car?
Is it possible to have it make a sound, like most aftermarket alarms do,when you unlock/lock the door?

What other functions are there included in the alarm? When I vibrate the car(like kicking the tire, punching the windows with acceptable force), the alarm doe not go off.

TIA.

It comes standard in all MB models in the U.S. It is silent by default, but sound can be enabled dealer by setting country to Netherlands. It does go off if you kick a tire hard enough. So it will if you try to jack the cur up.

Thanks for the info.

I'll be going in for service tomorrow, should I tell them to set it to Netherlands or Norway(or are those 2 the same )?

The reason it goes off when you kick it hard enough is either becuase you are tripping a tow sensor or a roll over sensor. Not because of a shock sensor as most shock sensors are useless and give false alarms. The Factory Alarm can be added to cars that do not have it. The system monitors all 4 doors, trunk, hood. It disables the ECU module so the car cannot be started either. The system also has a TOW sensor in the trunk area and a roll over sensor to make sure all doors are unlocked in case of a roll over crash. Also, the siren has a back up battery built in. This system can also be upgraded to include a interior motion / glass breakage sensor like I have done. As you can see, this is a pretty extensive alarm system The setting you are referring to is the Netherlands setting found on the REAR SAM module.

When I pirchased my Benz in April, the dealer reviewed the extras available for the car (tire insurance, etc.). When he got to the page in his book covering the Lo-Jack option, he blew past the page and commented, "If anyone can get past a Mercedes factory security system, they deserve to have the car." That, to me, was a pretty strong endorsement of the stock system.

PLEASE go back to this "dealer" and ask him what planet he's from because there hasn't been an alarm system made that can not be foiled/disabled by someone who wants it. Call his bluff and ask him to take any MB from his lot, park it in on the "hot" side of town and time how long it takes someone to drive it away.

Man, it's amazing to see how much smoke dealers pump up people's butt.

Yet if they manage to disable the factory alarm and drive a Merc away without a smart key, they indeed deserve to have it. In fact, they usually tow them away or put them in trailers and haul away, then take apart for parts.

Still, is the standard Immobilizer enough even without the alarm system that MB offers? My dealer told me that an alarm system is not needed so I didn't buy the alarm.

I believe that the immobilizer/smart key alone are enough to prevent hot-wiring of any Benz. Whether or not the alarm is needed - only you should decide, not the dealer. For example, if someone takes the wheels off your car or crack-opens doors/trunk, immobilizer would be pretty useless, you would want to have an alarm.

Hey sunman, I asked you some time ago, when you installed the alarm system, if you know the parts needed to install the alarm sytem, but I got no answer.

My car doesn't have it and I want to install it (I'm from Europe, of course).

Thanks

If you need the exact part numbers, I am not sure of them and I would have to look them up. I can outline the parts needed though. Ask your dealer for the exact part numbers as there are quite a few.
