The EU last December released a study that made headlines in Europe about the health implications of exposure to emissions of particulate matters (a ppt is available here). In short, PM emissions are cutting the current average life expectancy by about 9 months in the EU overall, and by up to 1–2 years in some member states. Even with expected emission reductions, by 2020 a European's life expectancy is still expected to 5 months shorter than it otherwise would be.

While the article itself is interesting, apparently the writer isn't much of a gearhead:
"The turbodiesel is an extremely advanced piece of machinery, featuring a third-generation commonrail injection system with piezo-electric injectors, an aluminium-crank, a 24-valve head and electrically adjusted turbocharger vanes."
I hope the aluminum crank is either a typo or something other than the crankshaft.

65% of new cars selled in Europe are diesel, they are more expensive than the petrol ones, but the engine run more miles, the return vallue is higher and the running costs are less than with a petrol one, specially the fuel, and they run like hell (I have a new Audi A6 3.0 V6 TDI with 225bhp similliar to the C320cdi and it performance much better than a 3.2 one with 250bhp!!!)
In europe, only the little and the big petrol engines are sold (1.0-6.0), the mid range are all diesel (1.5-3.0)
