Thanks supeRama. Nice article. They say the 6-speed is notchy... others say it's vague. Just shows how opinions vary, even among the "savvy press."

my 2 cents

I love manual cars. I love women too. Interesting enough, similar to women (and women probably feel this way about us men too), no two manual cars really feel the same (as per my experience*).

With my dad being a used car dealer - no he is not greasy and a cheat - I have had the pleasure to drive many cars varying from corvettes, porsches, and mustangs to supras, probes, and chevettes. You cannot compare one to another - each being unique. However, as beauty is to the eye of the beholder, so is manual trannies feel to the driver

Yeah, but notice that every article calling the manual "notchy" only had the non-C7 version at their disposal. And MB is certainly not pushing the merits of the C7 package - not in their brochures, nor by giving the testers a plain-vanilla edition. On the other hand, each review of the X-type Jag I've read featured the (costly) sports package...

I never realized the C7 shifter was different until I came to this forum - I merely bought it for the better-looking rims and the extra gadgetry (body-colored handles, aluminium pedals, door sills, and thumb rests on the wheel). If you've got something good to sell, why not pump it a bit more.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what does a notchy shifter mean? My friend had a Honda nad now drives an Ausi A4 and he told me the shifter in Audi is notchy too. Apparently Honda makes the best manual shifters .

It can mean that there is difficulty shifting into gear. The actual shift motion should be smooth without requiring any undue force. A notchy shifter might need a good yank on the stick or a few tries to get it into gear.

This should not be confused with driver error such as gear grinding from poor timing.

Ausis, er, Audis and Volkswagens have cable shift linkage which often is said to be 'notchy' (see previous post for explanation on what 'notchy' feels like). It seems like the cable linkage flexes and balks giving it that indirect, disconnected feel.
