Coolant replacement every 15 years?
On page 5 of my 2005 C-Class maintenance booklet it says "Have the coolant (water/anticorrosion/antifreeze mixture) replaced every 143,000 miles or 15 years."
Is this actually correct??? I can't believe coolant will last 15 years!

From BMW's website... BMW offers one of the most comprehensive maintenance programs in its class. Not that service is needed often, only every 15,000 miles or so. Just about anything your BMW might need replaced or serviced—brake pads, wiper blades, oil change, checkup—is fully covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.*

I believe in the 15 year coolant change if you follow the advice of the factory. It assumes that you only top off, if necessary, with MB antifreeze and use deionized or distilled water in a 50/50% mix. They don't assume that you might loose the fluid through a bad hose, system leak, or contamination by combustion by-products. This happens when the head gasket leaks. They do point out that their antifreeze is only a couple of bucks more than Pep Boys, and they say they have something in the system that is released little by little and protects the cooling system over that time period. You can read an interesting article here:

Show it to your dealer before he jacks up your trousers and tries to rotate your wallet for an antifreeze change.
Mobil One is good engine oil, yeah expensive, but it does not have the varnish included with conventional oils. I had 225K on my Scorpio using Mobil one, and the engine ran fine, with only a 5% decrease in compression from 9K when I checked it before purchase. I took off the oil pan at 100K to scrape the sludge and clean the intake screen. It was a waste of time and a gasket because there was no sludge, and the screen was fully open, just a little bit dark in color.

Prior to BMW covering scheduled maintenance, the recommended oil change interval was 5-7k (when it was in the owner's dime).

I never heard of a radiator or hoses lasting that long. Are you supposed to recover the fluid, replace the radiator and hoses and put the old fluid back in? Now if they can only make gasoline that last 15 months, let alone 15 years.

According to the link that Moviela provided, MB installed a slow-release protection device in the cooling system. This device is a packet of silica gel in the coolant reservoir.
