2008 C-class: $85,000?

In the latest issue of Automobile magazine (M3 on the cover), there is an article on the new 2008 C-Class.

I went straight to the specs list, and noticed that the price says $85,000 as tested.

$85,000??? for a $30k car?

At first, I thought it was a typo.... surely they meant $35,000?

But then I read the article too.. it says that their C350 was $85,000 and they asked the reader not to worry, because the C350 will start off below $40k.

But why would I pay $85,000 for a C-class sport sedan? I don't get it.

Even the Audi S4 is around $50k and the mighty RS4 is around $65k.

Thoughts?

I'm sure it a mistake...I wouldn't worry about it. I am sure the new C63 will be above 60K.

Unless the C350 has some special modification or a limited special edition.

If a C-class costs $85,000, it better be a AMG C63 tuned by Brabus w/ all the performance boost kit and everything else Brabus has to offer.

yes, in USA... in the spec section, it had the $85k figure

in the article, it said that the Euro price is around 60k or something (I don't have the mag with me right now).. But, I just converted $85k to Euro.. it comes out to be about 63k Euro

Then it said not to worry, because the base C350 will be under $40k.

All that makes me think that they weren't kidding... but it doesn't make any sense... the writer didn't even seem to flinch about the S-class price for a C-class car...

If you all don't have Automobile magazine around you, I'll try to scan it and post it... I tried to take a picture with my camera phone, but it's not good enough for magazine text.

60K Euro=about 40K US. The Euro is about 1.5 to 1 US dollar.

US $1 - Euro $1.35

Therefore it will be less, not more. You are confusing the numbers.

They meant in US dollars it would cost $85k in germany. This is why they said don't worry, it is $40,000 in the US.

I hope you don't have to travel outside the US with your US dollars...

That doesn't make any sense... btw, they said that the base price will be $40k for the C350. They said that their tested car was $85k.

The only thing that would make sense to me is, if they admit a misprint in the next issue. (Or if they can somehow explain the massive hike in price for their test car)

Wait wait wait....lets do the high school math again. According to XE.com
$1Euro = USD1.35 or USD1=0.738Euro
Therefore, $60KEuro=USD(60*1.35)=$81K (and not $40K...Euro has higher value than USD....ring the bell yet??)
I am glad my mom sent me to school.

Anyways, besides the math...its still interesting to see such insane number for a C class.

well, I didn't have time (or even remember) to scan it over the weekend, but here's the issue I'm talking about:

http://www.automobilemag.com/
(As of today, the main page on the website shows the issue with the M3 cover... not to be confused with every other car mag with the M3 on the cover. )

And here's the contents:
http://www.automobilemag.com/toc/0705_toc/
The contents say that the C-class is on page 60

Can anyone confirm this?

How come I can buy an E-class for a nice discount if I use European Delivery to bring it back to the US?

I've had Automobile mag since last year, and I have never seen a figure like this... I say give it a month, and watch for a "typo alert" apology next month.

$85k US dollars for any W204 (AMG or not) is retarded. Almost 100k for a C-class? C'mon

Come on guys, did anyone actually read the article? It wasn't a U.S. price, it was a European price. Guys a C350 isn't going to cost as much as a S550 no matter what you put on it! Why is this thread still open?

No, it's not just a European price. The European price for a C-class cannot be $85,000.

They said that it was the price of the car, "as tested". Either they put in a diamond-studded shifter or it's a misprint.

You know that I can buy a discounted Mercedes when I get European delivery, right? Now imagine that I buy a base C-class for $30k. Now, I go to Europe and pick it up. The car just cost me $28k to buy in Europe, with the 7% discount.

Now, I can sell it to my European friend for $80k because, according to your logic, the C350 will normally cost the Europeans $85k.

I guess I can't see what the point is here. We know a C350 won't cost 85K when it comes here in August, no matter what you put on it. Its matterless, IMO.

You'd all be VERY surprised how much more the same C-class costs in germany. Back when I ordered my 2005 W203 I payed about $35k - the same car at the same time ordered for germany use was about $65k (converted from euro to dollars) - NO JOKE, I was shocked. So I could imagine that the new C350 W204 is somewhere around $85k for people who buy it in germany.

Why is is so much more expensive? The answer is easy. In Europe they charge you for every little thing extra. The base price of the 230 is about 4k higher, and that is without A/C, AMG Package, etc etc.. They even charge you for the aluminum pedals, security alarm, electronic key ... and thats how it adds up.

Luckily we wont ever see these prices in the US because of the market. But people in Europe are literally be pulled over the table with these prices, especially when this model is built in germany.
