Question: Why does MB think we Monkeys

Maybe they designed it with American kids in mind? Compensation for no rear seat entertainment system, let them swing on the doors

I guess the new bunch of commericals for W204 when they come out will say, not only will our door hinges hold 200lbs but the NEW C Class can put 4 1l2 bodies in the trunk without interfering with the emergancy trunk opener. Oh for those from Europe trunk= da boot.

Well, unless the car hits you from above when you've got the door open, how is the amount of downward pressure the doors can take relevant?

Its presumed that the entire car is build extra strong by the door test. It probably is built stronger, but they figured hanging people on the doors would stick in your mind better than that side crash video on the MB website. One's slightly entertaining while the other makes you think that if you buy the car, you'll get hit in a side impact crash.

The reason they showed the strength of the doors is simple. For years, people who even didn't own Mercedes knew that the way the door closed was like a tank. I'll give you an example, a few years ago we bought new doors for every room in our house and when we were in the store my mom was asking what the difference was between the solid wood one and the one that wasn't all wood or whatever. The guy said that the solid wood ones "close like a door on a Mercedes."
I think that is why they wanted to show the doors strength. I can say that the doors do close nicely on the new C-Class and sound a little more like the Mercedes of years ago.

Doors
Come on you guys, You really don't know why??
It's for the Macy's Day Parade!
You can open the doors and sit on/in them.
Actually, Have you noticed on all the commercials(not just that one)
at the end the commercial he always closes the door on the cars so you can hear how solid it sounds.

Suppose you are out at a bar with three of your friends. You all meet 4 attractive young ladies and decide to take the party back to your place. How are you going to get everyone home ? This is where the doors come into play. You sit the four young ladies on the door and drive home (slow and careful; you don't want anyone in the car ending up dateless). Plus the door can be used as a gauging system; if the door breaks while one of these aforementioned young ladies is sitting on it you know she weighs more then 200lbs and someone in the car is wearing their beer googles.
Sorry; its a rough day and I just couldn't resist...

or...you ditch your 3 buddies and split with the ladies. The doors are a non-issue at this point. :

I have seen many elderly and obese people pull them selves from the seat using the top of the door for assistance - it is relevant.

We have 41 posts before me discussing the commercial. I'd say that in an industry where breaking through the clutter and memorability are the goal, we have just demonstrated how successful was that C Class spot!

C300 Sport LOADED
Haha, I actually checked this fact.
I weight almost 185lbs, and I sat on the door. (with window down) before we purchased the car back in Dec 2008.
Three people were sitting on the opened door and no problem.
I was just curious and asked the salesman and he said to try it.

Has MB always made doors that are this strong, or is it just the new designs? My brother in law 09 E class, doesnt have a thunk sound like our C's do.

Porsche Macan S SportDesign / Ex M-B's: 11 & 10 & 06 E350's, 02 S500
M-B's have always made strong doors, and sitting on a 211's door should yield the same results as sitting on the C's. Of course, being newer, with newer forms of high strength steel avail, the newer the model, the stronger the steels used for the doors. The sound coming from a cars door has mostly to do with how the sound is engineered, although many people seem to think the sound determines how strong the car, or door beams themselves are. The 211's front doors sound too "flimsy" for my tastes too, and the 204 obviously has that extra effort to bring back that classic "thud". I'm sure that thud does have indeed a connection to the strength of the door and build quality, but it's mostly just a "sound". Lots of cars that have flimsy closing doors perform superbly in side crash tests, etc.
