Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
WHAT THE MANUAL SAYS
According to the US manual (pg 62), ESP is supposed to "stabilize the vehicle" by:
1.) recognizing "when a wheel is spinning"
2.) recognizing "when the vehicle starts to skid"
3.) "applying brakes to the appropriate wheel"
4.) "limitting the engine output"
Then, on page 63, Electronic Traction System is briefly described as being "a component of ESP" which "improves vehicle's ability to utilize available traction [...] by applying the brakes to a spinning wheel". Finally, Electornic Traction System can never be turned OFF; even when ESP is turned OFF, "the elctronic traction system is still enabled".
MY QUESTION
Has anyone experienced this system at work?
I did, and I think it "took over" surprisingly early. I mean, as soon as there was a very slight and controlled 4-wheel drift @ ~75-80mph on dry surface in a long and constant radius turn, ESP kicked it causing a sudden woble and brief understeer; the engine note changed as well (reduced power maybe?). It surprized me how early ESP took over, and no, I don't claim I'm a great driver by any means, but ESP kicks in too early, I think. Or maybe I was cought off-guard as this was the first time I notcied it. Next time I'll expect it, or, in the right conditions and when I feel the itch, I'll turn it OFF.
I'll switch it off (and even then, ESP "continues to operate when you are braking") and get the car in the same condition and see how it behaves. No doubt ESP can be a live saver and a great deal of engineering work went it, but it's a bit too "parental" and spoils the fun, too early - I think.
What do you guys think?

Maybe I should say that I don't intend to drive like a maniac with or without ESP. I do, however, like to experience ESP ON and OFF in what I consider to be safe conditions;

Honestly - if you are driving 75 - 85mph - be thankful the ESP kicks in when it does before the force of motion goes beyond the point of no return.
