Roadtrip -- 26.5 mpg

Just got back from a 500 km roadtrip from Toronto to Owen Sound and back. Going up yesterday, it was heavy rain and fog. The car was great through the rain. The rain-sensing wipers kept up, and the tires posed no problems through even the large puddles. Coming back today, it was really windy (100 km/h or 62 mph) winds and the car got twitchy, which was perfectly understandable. We kept up at 120 km/h with confidence as I watched the SUVs and pick-ups essentially driving in S'es. I was surprised to have only seen one accident.

I love the planted feel of the car at highway speeds, but it seemed most happy doing between 80 km/h and 120 km/h on the two-lane roads. Very docile. Once in a while, I would punch the throttle to pass, and that brings the engine and the exhaust to life.

On relatively hilly (not mountainous) side roads, I was able to get the car down to 8.7 L/100km (27 mpg). But cruising on the highway at 120 km/h seemed to have brought it back up to 9.0 L/100km (26 mpg).

My final average for the return trip:

And for our non-metric friends:

I got my C300 Sport 4Matic in November. I live close to work, so I only have about 1,400 miles on it so far. I have been getting better MPG each drive, but currently am about 23 - 24 MPG on the highway and 18 or so in the city. Hopefully it gets broken in a bit more and improves.

No way! you mean there is actually someone else out there that thinks the C300 has plenty of acceleration? I'm just messing around as most people that come on this forum think C300's are slow. Mine feels pretty quick. Anyway on topic I have driven two long trips in my wifes C300 the best I've ever got was 26.4 but the car mostly gets around 24 ish +/- and around 18-20 in town.

I agree, I drove both the C300 and my brothers cadillac CTS and the C300 does feel more powerful, and I thought the caddy was pretty quick. I'm happy with the performance of the 300 so far.

I find that the fuel economy changes significantly between highway driving and city driving. I don't recall my other cars varying this much.

On that note, 8.8 L / 100km was much better than what I expected from a car that only had 2600km on it. I didn't expect to fully break in the car until about 8000 km. It seems to be settling in very nicely, and I am hoping that it will get even better over the course of the next 4000 km.

Anybody else try driving the car in that 80 km/h to 100 km/h sweetspot?

My driving seems to have me avg. about 22 MPG. Not bad. I'm idling a lot (like at starbucks cough cough), and the revs are so low on idle I think it's better than my last car on fuel, when doing this.

Maybe I'll even see improvements, once the car has more miles (It is still under 500).

I have the C300 4Matic version, and I too found the acceleration to be fast enough for daily driving and passing by other slow cars on the highway.

I find the acceleration to be fast from 80km/h to 120km/h .

One minor annoyance with the 7 speed auto tranny I find in our car is a bit slow to respond when shifting to the next gear, which takes approx 1 second. One day I as trying to pass this car on the highway in front of me by changing to the left lane. As I signaled the right turn signal, I shifted using the semi-manual to down shift one gear. As I down-shifted, there wasn't any response and then as I was about to tap the gear knob again, THEN it shifted down.

Anyone else thought the response time was kind of slow? Only when you shift the gears with the gear knob. Not when its on at auto shift.

I am looking for more "real world" comparisons. : I betcha if I had reset the trip after the car has been rolling, I should get better mileage. But in the real world, there will be stop-and-go. On this particular trip, I was stuck behind a tractor (the real kind) for about 6 km and could see my MPG dropping.

Maybe there should be two running tallies:
(1) Best ever segment MPG
(2) Best historical MPG

Overall, 2500 km on the car and I am running 12 L/100km.

JRAMGV8 -- your E350 has the same engine so I'd expect similar mileage performance. Your engine is pulling a bigger car, but mine's driving all 4 wheels.

TANKTUBE67 -- I did an average of 47 mph over the entire 130 mi trip. That includes a few minutes of warmup, doing 90km/h on some side roads, getting stuck behind that F!ing tractor, red lights, and 120 km/h on the highway. Since the police started confiscating cars if caught driving 50 km/h over speed limit, I have slowed down (a little).

60 km/h on main streets
80 km/h on country roads
100 km/h on most divided highways

No radars allowed in Ontario.
So 150 km/h and kiss your Benzo good bye.
