It has to be this way or else you can't pull the dip stick out behind the engine!

Yes, as noted above, MBs have had this double-jointed hood release for a very long time....nothing new here.

Secondly, it is not necessary to go to the "full up" position to check the oil dipstick.

Now that the grill is no longer attached to the hood, this feature is less important than it used to be - with the grill hanging there, the mechanics really loved being able to get it up and out of the way.

The vertical hood position also helps with letting light into the engine bay on those overcast days that you're working on it. It also just saves you from hitting your head when you're working from the side. Even short little me hits my head in the normal open position.

There have always been two positions for opening MB hoods. The first one is normal then the second one as shown in the pic is called the "service position"

The only difference between the 204 and previous MB's is that the 204 utilizes two different hood struts. One is for normal open and the other is for full open positions. There is no hindge that needs to be "activated" to get to full extended position, you just simply push it up higher.

Does this pertain to the W211? If so, how do you do this? Tks.

It absolutley should. On each arm that keeps the hood open there should be a tab that you can push in to lift it up into the higher locking position. Just push both tabs in and lift the hood higher.
