C350, 4matic - Which winter tires would you get?

Hi guys,

I'm looking into purchasing winter tires. I read through the forums, and it appears that there are a lot of suggestions on Pirellis, Dunlops, Hakkas, etc. However, keeping in mind that I don't have a lot of money to spend, I was talking to a tire dealer here in Toronto and he mentioned a couple of them. I wanted to get your thoughts on whether you thought they were any good and how much they should run for.

So... for 225/45/17, the dealer recommended the following:
1) Semperin Wintergrip, or
2) Viking Snowtech

He said they are decent (not top of the line) and should be good for these lovely Canadian winters. I'm just going to put them over the stock rims as purchasing additional rims is not in the budget.

My wife also has Yokohama Ice Guards on her BMW. Are these any good? The dealer said they aren't bad, but would still recommend one of the two listed above.

What do you guys think? Decent tires?

And how much should I pay just for the tires?

Let me know.

Thanks.

Hey

I have some (slightly used) Michelin X-Ice on my rear-wheel drive 300E and they were suprisingly good this winter. And we had a lotta snow.

I would highly recommend those tires

Have a good day

I ran the Viking SnowTech on a Jetta and they worked very well. Handling is good and the also are pretty quiet.

Thanks. I'm getting conflicting info from different dealers. I have another one telling me that Viking SnowTech suck. I have no idea who to believe. It appears that the right ones for me, are the ones that the dealers have in stock.

I recommend Dunlop Winter Sport M3 if they make them for this car. I had them on my G35 Coupe and they worked nicely. Forget about Blizzak.

Hankook IceBear W300 is what I have and they are fairly quiet and doesn't wear no where near as fast as the Blizzak tires, which is good if you live in an area where winters could be mild and dry. They are comprable to the Blizzak LM which is the tires I had before, but the IceBear is an excellent value and a very affordable snow tire.

Ha ha ... thanks for your responses on other tires, but I was looking for your input on the two I mentioned.

What are your thoughts on the following 225/45/17 tires:
1) Semperin Wintergrip, or
2) Viking Snowtech

Great, Good, Decent, Garbage?

I got my Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D 225/45VR17 tires from Tire Rack, mounted on Sport edition 17 x 7.5 rims, wheel locks, new lugbolts, delivered to Toronto, freight, GST, duty, brokerage in for US$1474.63. They are excellent tires, and I couldn't find a dealer anywhere here that could match that price. BTW, the Canadian C class does not use tire pressure monitors mounted in the rims, so you do not need to order those.
PS: These tires without rims from Tire Rack are only $96 each, plus taxes etc., but I think it is a mistake to mount and dismount tires spring and fall on your factory rims. You will need to rebalance each time you change and they are likely to damage the rims over time.

Don't know if it is different in Canada, but I recently discovered that the wheels on my early-build C300 4matic are staggered eventhough the brochure said the staggered wheels are not available on the 4matic option.

So now I have 225/45/17 snow tires on all my wheels eventhough the rears should be 245/40/17. Doh!
I will be changing the rear tires to the proper size soon.

That is not a problem. I think the dealer even told me that they would be putting all the same wheels on.

Mine are staggered as well and I have a 4matic.

Which tires are you referring to that are $96 each?

Ideally I can see what you are saying about not mounting them on the stock rims, but I guess I have to look at the incremental cost.

A couple years ago Consumer Reports rated the Viking very high, especially if your area has dry spells between snow storms. That is why I bought them. And I was not disappointed. I would consider them for our C300, but Tirerack does not carry them and I would like to purchase new rims, snow tires, and TPM sensors as a package from them.

Thanks Colorado.

Does that suggest that Consumer Reports have not rated them highly in recent years?

No. They just test different kinds of tires. At that time they were doing snow tires. The next year they did all-season, etc.

Just realized that I have been typing it wrong all this time. SOrry, it was Semperit (not Semperin).

Results From the Nov 2005 Consumer Reports:

"In a separate series of tests, Consumer Reports rated the Michelin X-Ice best among 12 models of winter tires on the market. The Viking Snow Tech placed second, and the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice came in third. The Michelin and Goodyear have excellent snow grip. The Viking is best suited for all-weather use and more moderate winter conditions."

Hope this helps.

A lot of dealers that I spoke to kept saying that the Viking were cheap in quality and price. Yes, consumer report said that, but the dealers don't seem to be seeing it the same.

They are made by Continental--in Portugal. Worked well for me. Only a few dealers can get them, so they tend to down-play them. You asked only about those two brands.

That said, I will probably get Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance next fall for our new C300 Sport 4matic--with 16" rims from TireRack.

Sorry, I guess I should have explained how I got to those 2 tires. They were recommended to me by a friend of the families. I was not going to buy the high-end tires (like Pirelli's), but I wanted something that was decent. He recommended the Semperit and the Viking. I ended up getting the Semperit and so far I like them. I believe they are also made by Continental.

I actually made another mistake. It wasn't Semperit Winter Grip. It was Semperit Sport Grip. It handled pretty decently over the past couple days, but I really don't have a frame of reference. Never purchased snow tires before.

I'll be honest with you. Even with snow tires, I'm a bit hesitant to go out when there is a lot of snow. WOuld prefer to play it safe. This weekend, we have a winter snow storm warning (not sure why they have to specify winter ... when do we ever have a summer snow storm warning? ). Apparently we could get 30cm dumped on us by Saturday morning.

I hope my wife stocked up on some food from Costco. heh heh.
