C350, 4matic - Which winter tires would you get?
I'm looking into purchasing winter tires. I read through the forums, and it appears that there are a lot of suggestions on Pirellis, Dunlops, Hakkas, etc. However, keeping in mind that I don't have a lot of money to spend, I was talking to a tire dealer here in Toronto and he mentioned a couple of them. I wanted to get your thoughts on whether you thought they were any good and how much they should run for.
So... for 225/45/17, the dealer recommended the following:
1) Semperin Wintergrip, or
2) Viking Snowtech
He said they are decent (not top of the line) and should be good for these lovely Canadian winters. I'm just going to put them over the stock rims as purchasing additional rims is not in the budget.
My wife also has Yokohama Ice Guards on her BMW. Are these any good? The dealer said they aren't bad, but would still recommend one of the two listed above.
What do you guys think? Decent tires?
And how much should I pay just for the tires?
Let me know.
Thanks.
I have some (slightly used) Michelin X-Ice on my rear-wheel drive 300E and they were suprisingly good this winter. And we had a lotta snow.
I would highly recommend those tires
Have a good day

Great, Good, Decent, Garbage?

PS: These tires without rims from Tire Rack are only $96 each, plus taxes etc., but I think it is a mistake to mount and dismount tires spring and fall on your factory rims. You will need to rebalance each time you change and they are likely to damage the rims over time.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
So now I have 225/45/17 snow tires on all my wheels eventhough the rears should be 245/40/17. Doh!
I will be changing the rear tires to the proper size soon.

Mine are staggered as well and I have a 4matic.
Ideally I can see what you are saying about not mounting them on the stock rims, but I guess I have to look at the incremental cost.

Does that suggest that Consumer Reports have not rated them highly in recent years?
"In a separate series of tests, Consumer Reports rated the Michelin X-Ice best among 12 models of winter tires on the market. The Viking Snow Tech placed second, and the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice came in third. The Michelin and Goodyear have excellent snow grip. The Viking is best suited for all-weather use and more moderate winter conditions."
Hope this helps.

That said, I will probably get Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance next fall for our new C300 Sport 4matic--with 16" rims from TireRack.

I actually made another mistake. It wasn't Semperit Winter Grip. It was Semperit Sport Grip. It handled pretty decently over the past couple days, but I really don't have a frame of reference. Never purchased snow tires before.
). Apparently we could get 30cm dumped on us by Saturday morning. I hope my wife stocked up on some food from Costco. heh heh.
