I'd say that you either have something on the windshield over the sensor or the sensor is shot. Funny how these cars all seem to be falling apart at the same time. This week alone there have been three issues on this board alone, up until this point there were few problems and looking to be a trouble free first model year. Just wondering...how many miles do you have on your car?

Ours is still issue-free at 8300 miles and 10 months.
I see no evidence of things "falling apart" for the W204 ownership community.
That said, I agree that checking to see if there is anything blocking the sensor would be a good place to start. I never leave the wiper switch on unless it's actually raining, or threatening immediate moisture. These sensor thingees [and not just MBs] are notorious for being too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Another gimmick that I could do without.
Our rain-sensor works fine most of the time, but displays aberrant behavior occasionally, just like every other car I've ever had with this feature. I don't understand why the car makers think this is worth spending money on.

Did someone actually think, hmm...what if you can't see because of the rain and you forget to turn on the wipers?
Or...people are just not lazy enough.
Maybe someone said, "I'm tired of moving my finger to the wiper switch every damn time it rains."

Rain-sensing wipers: a pain? Yes, but sometimes very useful: YES.

8900 miles since 10/31 and no issues other than the broken glass on my fog lamp. Nothing MB could've done about that rock that hit it at 80 mph.
Just did some wood knocking just in case....

and more on point...i leave my wipers on auto and it has worked just fine.
about once a month or so it will randomly wipe once or twice, but i figure it is just the sensor picking up on something that then goes away on its own or because of the wipers.

C-300, XC70, Wrangler
10K + miles, nothing major (broken ventilation grill), I've had some "learning" experiences (door ajar but no signal, causing a rattle, screw in tire, etc.). Happy with the car. I don't expect to take it to the shop until the A service.
Re rain sensors: I like them. Living in the land of endless rain, they're very nice to have. My XC70 also has them, but in that car you have to turn them off and back on each time you restart the car, and sometimes during a rain, they "forget" that they're on and you have to turn them off/on again. Ugh.
The C is far better than that.

Well, I've had at LEAST two accounts where I honestly said "Well that was helpful"... I was driving along on a highway in the rain (left lane) when a truck in oncoming traffic (his left lane) went through a huge puddle and shot a lake of water over the median and directly on my car/windshield. I saw it coming and actually "ducked" even though I know damn well I'm in the car, but the wipers immediately came on full blast and got rid of it all. Else I would have still been finding my composure and searching for the windshield stalk.
