Nicks in windshield - Can they be repaired?

Hi

Today while driving down the highway loud sound on front glass. Yep. Two nicks right in the center of the windshield. They are quite small, but they obviously bug me.

The insurance is sending someone out to fix it. Can they fix very small nicks like that? Could it look worst afterwards?

Finally, does having such a repair violate a lease?

Thanks!

I dunno about the lease part. Never leased a car before.

Windshield can be fixed so that no one can tell the difference afterwards, depending on the severity of the damage. Sometimes they just fill in the scratch, but if bigger, they can make a little round hole and insert a circular piece of glass. In either case, it's very hard to tell unless the light hits the place in a certain way. And even then...

But you should get this done soon. One thing to remember: if your car has been in the sun for a long time (windshield is hot), do not take it to a car wash where cold water will hit the glass. The sudden change in temperature may cause severe cracks to develop beginning from where the original damage is. Not nice.

has to do with the material it is made of and the wiper sensors. PITA!!

The lease doesn't care, unless it is a crack, especially one that grows. A nick is ok.

Ah... makes perfect sense. Sucks. I guess that's another useless option (rain-sensor) that I didn't want but got because it was free (long story), and now will cost me money in the future. Niiiice.

The sensors are all over the windshield?

You guys are sure this can't be repaired ? I'll go take a picture.

Hum, picture doesn't come out cause of the size and everything.

The biggest one is like the width of 2-3 pencil leads. It's just on my nice clean windshield and I keep it clean all the time, they really stand out, and I read you should get these things repaired.

They're coming no matter what now, so I guess I'll see what they say.

Are the sensors in the middle of the windshield (middle in terms of height and across), thats where these couple nicks are.

It can be repaired so long as the size is less then a quarter, they fill it with a resin, you'll hardly see it.

Thanks! That makes me feel better. I"ll keep my fingers crossed.

Yes, both of them combined can be covered by a quarter (they are right next to each other).

You are fine... the lease states "starbursts, cracks or bullseyes"... which this does not fit under - a nick won't be charged for under the contractual obligations of a lease. They understand that these happen.

Thanks, do you recommend I cancel the insurance repair then, or see if they can do something with it?

Good information!!

I guess at this point I wonder if it would hurt to have them look at it and if they can fill it some and make it a little clearer, why not?

On my prior (a leased one), I got a nick in the first month!! I called a place called safelite auto glass and they came to my work and did the repair. It ran me $80 or so and it was flawless -- could barely tell anything was ever there! They do state however that in attempts to repair, sometimes the windshield MAY shatter. From my research and what I've read -- the MB windows are less likely than the BMW windows to break due to stress, but there is still a risk. The way I looked at it - there was a risk leaving them there as well, so pick your poison.

well at least the W204 doesnt have the blue tinted glass.
in my W203 when i got a stone chip, the resin of course wasnt the same color as tint so it stood out a bit.

I also have a fresh new stone nick on my windshield, i gotta get it fixed!

Hope you get it cleaned up for you. May I ask about how big yours is?

I'm anxious to hear what they say tomorrow morning. I'm hopeful! If they are too small, I could live with it, but I don't think they say that (knock on wood).

Thanks for all the support!

mine is about 1mm in width, very small, and not deep enough to feel from inside? The W203 had a huge chunk! missing, about the size of a nickel and that was fixable, so I'd assume this one would be no problem

Mine was a little over 1mm (the bigger one).

The guy claimed they were too small. From the outisde, they don't look bad, from the inside they are very annoying and right in the middle of the windshield. I hope Mercedes doesn't complain when the lease is up.

I'll try to live with it. It sucks cause I always have my windshield super clean, so it really stands out.

My poor Merc.

I read they can dremel them a little bit, and then the resin will stick better, maybe this guy didn't want to do that on a Mercedes or something. He claimed if he put resin it would just pop out in a few days.
