2009 Mercedes Benz C350 vs. 2009 Mercedes Benz C300

Hello all,

This is a granular comparison, but when luxury purchases are made (by the less than elite) we come down to the minuscule issues. Why would you choose one over the other? Let's see who has the best small reason (that I'm sure is quite big).

The manual transmission is the main reason I chose the C300 over the C350.

C350 for the power alone.

My thoughts on the manual is manuals are perfect for a two seater and tiny little efficient cars, not 4 door sedans, just my opinion (no disrespect to all the manual owners!). They may be more fun to drive if you are in to that but I'd rather have the C350 auto and blow right by you.

There's a pretty big difference in performance between the two. The C350 has bigger brakes up front too. Looks meaner!

Either way, buy which ever you prefer and I don't think you can go wrong.

Coming from her C230SS 6-speed, my wife originally wanted to opt for the C300SS 6-speed.

However, she wanted options like P2, MM, iPod Kit, Palladium Silver, etc.

After we priced them out we found that, if we opt for all the options she wanted, the MSRP difference was something like $3,xxx.

We called our dealer and they offered pretty good deal on the C350. She liked the Black Maple Wood Trim on the C350, the standard AMG 17" Wheels, and the more power 3.5L engine... So, we chose the C350 eventually.

We do miss the 6-speed transmission, but the 7-Tronic is not bad at all for an automatic.

With best regards,

You might notice that our esteemed editors can't even get the capacity correct & this is an MB board. The C300 has suddenly been demoted from 2996cc to 2800cc - idiots!

if you are referring to the page that appears when first logging on, those writeups are full of technical errors. Quite comical.

Yeah, I agree that plentiful power is always welcome in a car but the simple act (art) of physically shifting the gears is a joy into itself. You may very well accelerate past me, but you still won't be able to wipe the smile off my face...not to mention I will have the joy of heel&toeing into the first tight turn while you only get to move from brake to gas...
Besides, the extra weight hanging over the front axle of the auto 350 is what neccesitates those bigger brakes...
Honestly, they are both great cars but just get there a little differently and serve, in many ways, a different purpose.

As far as answering the original post, I really, really wish I would have went with P2 if for no other reason than the folding seats...those Home Depot trips can get interesting...

At the time I purchased my C300, I didn't think the differences in the C350 was justified by the additional cost. Had the difference been less, I'd probably have gone with the C350.

I'm still pleased with my C300.

IMHO, the differences between the two cars are NOT minor in the following three respects: power, steering, brakes.

Power: I have driven a few hundreds of miles in various C300s (when my C350 was in the shop), and indeed rented one for three days last Summer prior to deciding whether to spring for a C350. For me, it was not even close. The C350 is good enough that I bought it, even though a stick was not available.

Steering: Dunno the reason why I feel a big difference -- amount of weight on the front wheels, different suspension settings?

Brakes: Perhaps the most underrated difference is the brakes. The C350 has strong brakes, whereas I'd say that the C300 has merely adequate ones.

Yeah, considering the "Premium 1 package" is already included in the base C350, it's probably worth spending the extra 2 or 3 grand getting a C350 if you don't need manual or AWD.

We just bought a C350 for $3k under invoice price. I don't know how much a similarly spec'ed C300 Sport would cost but it's definitely hard to beat a deal like this.

Are you stating this from personal experience or did you find these numbers posted somewhere?
