Ran outta gas >_<
So I was in a hurry to get home from a night in the city and was nottttt paying enough attention to the gas gauge. Sure enough, half mile from my house I run out of gas.
After a long (and shameful) walk to the gas station -> back, I am now finding my car's a bit more jumpy when I hit the gas or brakes. It could all be in my dome, but I figure I'd see if anyone had an idea why this may be occurring (aside from copious amounts of retardation behind the wheel)?
Thanks!

probably still choking on air, let the car run for a while and im sure it will be fine.
as a rule of thumb, you shouldnt let it drop below a quarter tank because there is probably debris in the tank from the gas stations, and you dont want that to reach the pump/filter

IRT MB Roadside, I thought about it, but figured sitting in the car for 30 mins with a (now) angry wife was proooobably not going to work out too well. Instead I opted for the walk of shame under the banner of "fresh walk on a summer night" which had enough of an excusable undertone to keep me from the doghouse... Still can't believe that...
Anyway, thanks again for the heads up - I'll keep running the car and hopefully the jerkiness will disappear.

yes, there can be sediments however that's why we have fuel filters in these cars.
when the light comes on there are still 2 gallons of gas in the tank btw.

LOL i can totally see your wife (or a wife in general) get mad...
well i only use premium gas stations, actually Chevron only has been my family's choice, and no mixing brands. but i hear there is a lot of gunk from gas stations. Another rule of thumb is to not fill up your gas when the stations are being refueled, because when they add the gas in, the said gunk will mix into the rest of the gas

I change my fuel filter every other oil change.
And dude, you're good if you changed that into a positive with the whole starlight walk thing. Nicely done.

The engine control module and air mass sensor might need to reset and self adjust due to the sudden loss of fuel, this might take a couple of miles, but if the problem remains after several miles you might want to take the car to a dealer to check out the fault memory.

Clogged up my TT fuel filter because I had no more gas left and it sucked in all dirt and sand from the bottom of my tank

I think that's an old wivestale. Truth is that you are always sucking fuel from the absolute bottom of the tank no matter how much fuel you have in it. It's not like the inlet to the fuel pump is on a floating device that goes up and down with the level of the fuel.

lot of heresay in here.
1. the fuel pump has its own sock filter
2. I replaced the fuel tank in my mustang after 6 years and many refuelings, and the bottom of the tank was spotless. Upgraded the pumps in the new tank after 3 years, and again, the tank was perfect. The pump socks were slightly discolored but thats it.
3. think about what happens when you drive. The fuel is sloshing all over the place in the tank, and if there was any sediment, it would be suspended in the fuel after the first few turns you took.
running out of fuel is not good for anything, but some of the info in here is questionable.

I have to agree with Oliverk! If you haven't ever noticed the gas pump has a filter that filters the gas before it ever enters your car. There might be some very very fine particulate but nothing bigger then the micron level of the filter on the pump.

Regarding keeping your fuel clean, I always wipe the pump nozzle with clean rag before inserting it. It is not so important with petrol but because diesel attracts dust , I find it a wise move. The rag soon becomes filthy! I keep the rag in a plastic bag in the boot.
