As mentioned, I was talking about option 518 Media Interface. NOT the 'old' iPod interface. Can imagine that that's a different story, but in any case MB now do offer a new black-tipped iPod (only) cable for the Media Interface which can charge both old and new iPods. The old 3-way iPod/USB/Aux-In cable (which was white tipped) couldn't do this. This cable for sure is just a simple plug and play job (unless 518 in US is a completely different thing than in Europe).

AFAIK the Media Interface has only recently been introduced in the US anyway.

just to let you guys know.. this is how the ipod cable looks like from the otherside of the glove box..

it's not the one he's holding, but the one underneath it. you can see the left end goes into the glove box and the right end in plugged into the system.

has anyone with the new cable experienced any sound quality differences like its louder. thats my only problem with the current wire its not loud enough and it starts to distort when i bump it.

I had the original IPod cable replaced (white tip) and replaced, by the dealership, with the one that charges my ITouch version 2 (black tip) and I notice no difference at all in sound quality or loudness?

It's easy to replace, it's an ethernet-like cable that snaps in on mine. Build date is 02/09.


If the dealer doesn't replace mine under warranty, I will just buy it and do it myself.

yeah no kidding, I find it funny that people think the iPod has sound quality to begin with. I have done a lot of testing with this lately and there is no way it compares to a CD. such as a properly recorded Sheffield Labs CD

Just to clarify I installed this cable Thursday morning on my C350. Steps are as follows:

Open Glovebox
Grab front edge of side panel and pull out towards the door
It is in there pretty tight and will pop off hard
once it's off 90% of the time you will see the "ethernet" type connection right there. Just unplug fish the old wire out and install the new wire.
Reinstall panel
DONE!

***One note is that mine was a factory installed Ipod kit in which they tucked the module up behind the reinforcement. because of this I had to remove the lower plastic panel under the dash (3 torx screws). Once that was lowered was able to pull down the module and change the wire.

This new updated Black wire should be able to charge all Ipods not just new generations. Where as the original which tip wire could only charge old versions and not the new Iphone 3G / 3GS or newer Ipods.

I called my local dealer and they said NO ONE in the country has this! BS Do I need just this wire to hook up my Ipod or do I need something else that goes behind the radio????

Acmf74 I think I was talking with you in another thread. What do you have in your car? You haven't clarified this.

Do you have Audio 20 / 50 or Multimedia? What year is your vehicle? If it's a US spec 2010 does your car have code 518?

Honestly I don't know off hand..

it's a 2009 C300 4matic P1 package.


If the multimedia incorportes the Navigation system I don't have that.

Alright so you have 2009 C with either Audio 20 / 50. I'm going to assume you are in the US and with that US spec meaning the 518 code was not available to you.

Now the question is do you currently have an Ipod connection in your glove box? Is there a cable that can be connected directly into your Ipod? If not you DO NOT have Ipod integration and will have to purchase the complete Ipod integration kit for the '09 model year C-class, or utilize the stock 1/8" AUX jack which you can purchase a cable from Radio shack 1/8" Male to 1/8" Male cable.

If you do have the Ipod connection and the actual connector that plugs into the ipod is white then you have the "old" cable that will charge everything but the Iphone 3G/3GS or new latest generation Ipods. If this is the case and you have an Ipod that is not charging you will just have to purchase B6 7 82 45 31 in which is in stock in the US and dealer should be able to get.

I know I'm in the wrong forum but there so little informations on this that I feel I don't have another choice.

Do you know if the new cable will charge the Iphone 3GS in my 2010 B200 (canadian model). My cable which currently is plugged in the glove compartment will charge an old ipod nano 4G but not my new 3GS iphone.

As for the nano 4G do you know if the new cable will still charge it?

Is it normal that the nano 4G (with old cable) is still charging once the ignition if turn off? will it drain the battery if left plugged for a couples of days?

I've just tried it at the dealer and it doesn't work either. Maybe we don't have the same setup. I have the media interface (the one with the connector into the glove box).

My cable (one of the three that came with the media interface) that came with car didn't work either (don't have the number with me) but since I was at the dealer I've tried another one (A00 1827 6804) and it didn't work either.

So here's my setup again :

B200 with media interface (OEM) in the glove box. With the standard ipod /iphone cable that came with it, the iphohe interface can be control from the radio and steering wheel but it cannot be charged. I've two other cables which don't work either.

any other suggestions?

I used the one iatacs19 used (B67824531). It works great. The only tool I used was a torx 20 to get the screws out. Plug & play all the way.

I bought the Griffin Charge Converter from Amazon and it works in both my 2008 C350 and 2008 GL320 which have the same iPod interface cable. The Griffin adapter works fine with the newer iPod Nanos as well as the iPod Touch--the interface works the same and with the adapter the vehicle charges the iPods. I recommend this product.

In a previous life, I spent a LOT of time testing iPods, so here are a few observations from that:

Charging:
Older iPods charged at 8-18 volts or so, not picky. Newer iPods, iPhones, and iPod touch (not iTouch, that would be something else ha ha) charge at USB voltage which is 5V. They will be very picky about the charging voltage, so cheap chargers may cause shutdown sometimes.
The adaptors should not affect the sound, it's just a pass-through connection for audio.

Sound Quality:
We measured a similar sound quality to average aftermarket CD players. The sound out of the dock connection was typically a little better + more extended low bass compared to the headphone jack. The sound comes out analog, not digitally, as there are still few devices licensed by Apple to use the digital output. The Media Interface was not one of them at the time I was testing with that.
--> Poor iPod sound is probably the fault of poorly made files, i.e. too much MP3 compression, or possibly iPod EQ settings causing clipping and distortion. A straight output from an Apple Lossless file can have very good sound quality.

My 2 cents. The Scosche adapter never charged my 3g Nano. Scosche UK were really helpful and swapped it 3 times but it never did work. I have the iPod kit that gives full accessibility via the satnav screen and Comand controller. Simple solution: get an iPod classic 120 gb and have all the music you'll ever need + charging! If you don't think they're cool, leave it in the glovebox permanently and onbody will ever know.

My 2 cents:
I consider the iphone/ipod cable a complete waste of $$, if and only if you care about how it sounds. If you don't care, then by all means get it.
If you do care, the PCMCIA slot is your solution for bringing your mp3s with you.
The sound coming from it is 100 times better than the crappy one coming from my ipod.

If you think the sound quality from your ipod cable is poor - I would check the quality of the sound files you are playing and/or have the dealership look at it because the sound quality is rather good, at least with the HK upgraded sound system - do you have the stock system or HK?

Vehicles with OEM Media Interface that are not charging their new IPhone / IPod can use this cable. A001 827 84 04 for Germany built cars, and B6 782 45 78 for Alabama SUV's. This is for US Spec cars.
