The big yellow ring behind the left side of the engine cover(between the cover and the fire wall).
Be careful when you check it. Every time I pull the dipstick, I always have a giant drop of oil drip off pretty quick. If you are not a little careful, you will have your engine cover all lubed up pretty soon and all the underhood dirt will stick to it.

Interesting, because everytime I initially pull my dipstick - its bone dry. I mean totally dry. There is some kind of vaccum affect going on inside the pan (I have a 4MATIC) that pulls the oil away from the dipstick. I have to pull it out, note its dry, then re-insert it so I can take an accurate reading with it.
No one else sees this? I know I'm not crazy, I have 26K miles on my car, and its been like this since new. And it hasn't burned a drop of oil.

And at 26K miles, I assume the oil has been changed twice and the level is always verified after an oil & filter change.

Yes of course, with the engine shut down.
I initially pull the stick out, its bone dry. Then I re-insert it, remove it, and check the level - it's fine. It does the same thing immediately after an oil change (I've done two DIY). Fill the car with oil, as soon as you drive it and everything comes up to operating temperature, stop the engine, check the dipstick, its dry. Slide it back in right away, it reads the correct level.
You don't see this on your car? It has something to do with the pan design on the 4MATIC then. Its the same reason why I cannot get more then 7Q out of the pan using a diptube drain method. Next change, I am going with an over the dipstick tube suction method like they do at the dealer, to see if I can get it all out.
As soon as you initially extract the dipstick, it must break some vacuum inside the pan that is pulling the oil away from the dipstick (stick is dry). Now, with the vacuum broken, re-inserting the stick allows the oil level to be read.
I will admit, pulling that dry stick out every 2000 miles to check the oil level causes my heart to skip a beat, but there is oil there as soon as I re-insert. As I recall from the DIY oil change threads, some other 4MATIC owner reported the same thing.

My '09 with 1000-mi does the exact same thing. I'll probably ask service next time I go in for something but I'm not overly concerned about it. No messages about needing to add oil either.
