Question

For those of you who have had a 4-matic in the snow on stock all-season tread, how does it/did it perform?

Just wondering if I need to invest in snow tires - we get tons of snow in sb...

Thanks,

Chris

Another round of ICE
Just was talking about this on the adjacent thread....all seasons in winter, even on 4MATIC...been there...done that....not good enough....buy Blizzak WS60. I'm in Michigan. Spinning all four corners doesn't really help if each tire is not hanging on well enough. Same advice as before....check survey results on tirerack.com for any all seasons versus winter tires and see some large sample ratings.

I concur with Sportstick !! I had thought i'd have much better grip because i had the infamous " 4matic " but i did slip and slide a bit in even an inch or two of snow with the all season michellins from what i heard a set of snow tires even on rear wheel drive is the way to go so with that being said a set of snow tires is a very good investment !

Nobody.

However, some people seem to think that it is ok to use All-Seasons because of the 4 wheel traction that the 4matic system provides for making the car go. What they tend to forget is that stopping is far more important than going in winter driving conditions.

They are a bunch of people here in Calgary that drive 4wd minivans on all-seasons that think they are indestructible. They are.... until they can't stop.

I had the summer tires on my C last yr. I had no problems. I even tired to get it stuck..lol. I was testing its ability. I'll post some pics of my horse play.

That being said, I will ALWAYS recommend good snow tires. Its just safer and willl drasticlly improve the cars ability. Oh and we had a huge snow fall last yr, up to 2ft. Thats alot in this neck of the woods.

4Matic with ESP is incredible in the snow and ice, no doubt about it. ESP lets you know if you're driving too fast for road conditions, so if it starts lighting up, slow down. If you drive sensibly in bad conditions, you should be fine with the All Season tires. If you don't mind paying for snow tires, then it certainly won't hurt. I really don't like driving with them. They're noisy.

Give the All Seasons a try, and see how you feel driving with them. You can't control someone sliding into you, and if you're too close to the person in front of you in bad conditions, the ABS brakes, 4Matic and ESP can only do so much to save you. But, if you maintain good distance, and drive at appropriate speeds, I think you will be just fine with the All Season tires.

To all those people in the tri state area and below. I don't know if your municipality does a good job plowing your roads, but you definitely don't need to buy dedicated snow tires driving here. All-season tires is definitely more than enough for city/highway driving. Keep in mind, I am taking into account "SMART" driving. That's my .02 cents.

I concur if you live in any of the 5 NYC boroughs especially Manhattan where the any light dusting of snow melts due to the subway system however living in Northern NJ where our municipalities does a horrible job in plowing snows may be good even for the 4 to 6 days when it snows here. Ask anyone who has ever driver on rt 17 or 4 even with 2 inches of snow one will not see a plow for hours ??
