Really, thought that was only from 1999-2002?

I don't know. But, it doesn't make much sense to ship the major parts of them to the US for assembly and then ship them back to Europe the UK and expect to make a profit considering how many similar SUVs are built and sold there, most of which are diesels, anyway.

Such as the lovely Ssangyong Rexton.

Understandable but I see alot of middle eastern cars, European cars, Asian cars and such all the time come through the plant. Its about 50/50 foreign/domestic destination cars thats built at MBUSI.

Veloci - You guys certainly make petrol units for the UK - I might be out of date. That could be the case for here as well. Whatever - build quality is vastly improved & maybe you guys should be taking some of the credit. Our complaint level on the ML was unprecidented but comments have been positive recently. SA customers are a real fussy bunch because vehicles are so expensive here in number of months salary required to buy one.

You might remember Jeremy Clarkson's rude comment about the ML being built by "people who know more about picking cotton than assembling complex machinery" then "Swing low sweet chariot" & some other bull.

I would not take Clarkson too seriously - he does not believe in spoiling a good story with the facts.

Clarkson is comic relief for me most of the time anyway. Sure, most probably believe that Alabamians dont understand why MB doesnt offer options like a gun rack or Bluetic(Hound breed) instead of Bluetec but its not like that in the current southern United States.

Yeah! - many misconceptions. I've lived in Dallas & Marin County, Bay Area & travelled the US fairly extensively - great country & very kind people. Loved it. Clarkson plays up the American stereotype to the hilt.

...and was designed in Germany. So, were the issues design/engineering related or assembly plant issues?
